It's commonly accepted that there's just one species and that as they get older the dots get smaller and aligned.

I have 2 of them and I am convinced that they are 2 different species: the argus and the altivellis.

The argus is brown / the altivellis is almost black.

The argus has tiny well aligned spots even when small / the altivellis has a random pattern of larger dots even when large.

The argus has longer ventral fins than the altivellis.

This fish is only around 10cms in length.


It's easy to find much larger ones with the random pattern of larger dots.

There are also some fish that seem to be in an inbetween phase. I guess they are probably hybrids.

Here's my young altivellis and I am sure he/she will never look like the other one.
