Hello all,
I recently started a reef tank (a year ago) and I am going through different phases. Some good, some dreadful. Right now I am fighting red algae. I am hoping for some friendly advice. I have some fish that flourish for months at a time and others that don’t last a week. My corals were doing great for 9 months but now are all dead. Snails and crabs all doing well. What all things should I be checking and how often do I check these things to keep the tank consistent? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to R2R!!! Depends on what type of corals you like to keep, if Softy's or Lps then you can probably get bye with weekly testing of Alk and Cal, and monthly of Mag, nitrates, and phosphates. If SPS is your poison then you will need to check all of the above twice as much until the tank stabilizes and you know/have a feel for what the tank is doing.

Myself, I did have a good feel for what my tank was doing until I added a Co2 scrubber and raised the PH level to 8.2-8.3. Now I am having to test Alk and Cal every 3 days because my tank consumption increased drastically.

Can you post a current tank pic along with your parameters and equipment list. Also do you use ro/di water and do you quarantine?

This is the perfect place for you! What are your water parameters? Can you post a photo of the tank? Welcome to R2R!

Welcome Angry Buckeye. I know how you feel. Make yourself at home, and I'm sure there are lots of folks who can help you. There's a Member Tank forum where you can start a thread and tell us everything about your set up. We're happy to have you here. Welcome to the family.

What are SPS? What should Ph level be? My pet store said between 8.1-8.2 but you seem to think that is too high?
