As reefers, we pretty much all have that “bucket list” of things we want to do with our hobby. Some of us have less lofty goals…you know, stuff we’ve intended to do but just haven’t gotten around to it.

I know I certainly have. In a lifetime of aquarium keeping, I still have dozens of things that I want to do…when I get around to it. In fact, the scary thing is that there is this sort of “inverse” law going on…The longer I’ve been in the hobby, the larger my list of things I want to do but haven’t yet grows! Please tell me that I’m not the only one who this has happened to?

Yeah, okay, whatever…I’m still trying to get to that list…I mean, I have like hundreds of diverse things I want to do, some dating back to my teenage years, or even earlier! That’s one of the cool things about spending a lifetime in the hobby- you get to be exposed to lots of ideas over a very long time span…good for the imagination- a you-know-what on the budget and your free time!

And the list is really extensive, running the gamut from freshwater to saltwater dream tanks, experimental systems, biotopes, breeding schemes, plumbing setups, etc. The expansiveness of the list is only matched by the amount of fish-related crap I’ve accumulated over the decades…We all have “that closet” or place in the garage dedicated to THAT stuff, so don’t get me started…

So, I figured that if I’d come clean and list a bunch of stuff from my lifetime aquarium keeping “to-do” list, it might inspire some of y’all (where did I get the Texas drawl thing from…? LEVANSON!?!).

Anyways, here are a few doozies from my list, which I actually keep in a little notebook I’ve had since high school…sort of geeky, I know, but still.. In no particular order:

*Large Amazon River biotope aquarium, with Tetras, Knifefish, Discus, and Altum Angels (okay, so what if the Tetras would be menu items for everyone else? Apparently I failed to think that one through)

Are you kidding me? Yeah, the Amazon in your living room! Cool.

*Black sand monospecific reef aquarium covered with contrasting bright Pink Pocillopora damicornus (that’s not such a bad one, huh?)

*Super shallow look down tank with a bottom comprised only of Ricordea (I think it would cost most of my annual income to complete this project, however)

*Brackish water biotope, with Scats, Monos, Puffers, and Pipefish (I mean, who HASN’t had this fantasy before, right? LOL)

*Marine Paludarium (look up this term if you don’t know what it is…I can’t feed you everything!) designed to replicate a Palau “Coral Island”, complete with terrestrial tropical plants topside and lush corals underneath. (If you know me, you know I’ve been talking about this stupid idea for years- I should just do it already!)

Unknown.jpeg

My version of "Fantasy Island..." Yup.

*Shallow wide aquarium dedicated to only blennies and gobies (I dedicate this one to my friend Dave B./o2manyfish, the man who pretty much invented the concept of “doinker” fish..)

*Saltwater bare bottom “hardscape” with only Tonga branch rock and 20 assorted Damselfish (okay, so it’s really just an ill-fated FOWLR tank, right? Let a guy dream a bit, okay? I actually did something like this in the 1990’s, starting out with two dozen assorted damsels and ended up with just one big ugly Domino- ironically the ONLY Domino I had- as the “survivor.” What an awful “Lord of The Flies” type of experiment, right? Perhaps next time with Chromis?)

*The “Expedition to Easter Island.” The mission: Collect the ugly but uber cool Easter Island Pygmy Angelfish, Centropyge hotumatua…Why? Just because. Well, if you know me, you understand the obsession I have had with this fish. This absurd one actually had some legs to it, when Centropyge geek John Coppolino and I, apparently emboldened with too many gin and tonics or whatever, actually talked nose to nose about it in the lobby of a hotel during a MACNA some years back, literally for “like 4 hours straight..”(according to my then girlfriend.) Hmm. We got to the point of whipping out smart phones to look into airline prices, etc, before I finally came to my senses and opted to buy a home instead. Ah…still on my bucket list, nonetheless.

*Seahorse and Pipefish Seagrass Biotope- Yeah, I actually started this one…Got the seagrass part going. Just never got around to getting the Seahorses. Did get some Pipefish…It was probably just a bit too ambitious for my 40x40x22 cube…I KNOW I could have completed it if I tried it with a smaller aquarium. Yup!

alligator-pipefish-featured.jpg

I'm still scheming...came close. Oh, so close...

*Fancy guppy breeding system- Uh ha- the full-blown FW dream scheme, complete with like 10 tanks, water sprite, and the ambition to show up the stodgy, arrogant old school breeders who dominated the show circuit back in the 1980’s. (Alas, I was a teenager, with bigger dreams than budget- and there were only so many tanks I could stuff in that bedroom of mine…Sigh. One day. One day.)

setup2.jpg

I just needed a bigger bedroom...sigh.

*Royal Gramma tank- So, how many reefers actually dream about this stuff? I do. Ever since a dive trip that took me to Belize, Roatan, and Grand Cayman, were I saw whole harems of these fishes living together in caves, I’ve had the urge to recreate something like that…Like 20 specimens, a rock overhang, Halimeda..maybe some gorgonians and a Hamlet, Blackcap Basslett or two as well..Complete with a colorful palette of maroalgae…(Maybe someday)

Well, there you have like 1/25th of my “Things I’m gonna do but haven’t yet” list. Every reefer has one- or should have one, IMHO. Because without dreams, goals, and “one day I’m gonnas,” life can get kind of dull. Yes, live in the moment, but keep your dreams in front of you…There is so much out there to tackle in the aquarium hobby. Some of it is still the stuff of fantasy (yah, the swim-through Eagle Ray touch tank is a bit…ambitious), yet many of our dreams are easily attainable. Some are downright practical (“Someday I’m going to rearrange my sump so that I can actually change the reactor media without tearing apart the entire sump…’)

So, to coin the phrase, “Just do it.” Or, just “try to do it..” Whatever. Have dreams. Build fantasy reefs, if only in your head…But don’t ever fail to write them down..take notes…discuss them with other reefers. The hard truth is that you may never actually get to some of them…Or, you may get to all of them. Regardless, just having ideas and working them into your current reality is pretty satisfying. It can benefit your reef, your animals, the hobby- and your spirit!

Let's hear some of your "gonna get to's...! Inspire others- or yourself!

So, dream the dream, live the reality, and make things happen. Stay ambitious. Stay creative.

And stay wet.

Oh, and buy some more corals from us, ‘cause we have some killer stuff right now! (Shameless capitalist plug…)

My tank is the 16' dream tank for my basement. 16' long 4 deep and 4 tall. Has to be a fowlr, cause reef lighting would be too darned expensive.

*Royal Gramma tank-... whole harems of these fishes living together in caves…Like 20 specimens, a rock overhang, Halimeda..maybe some gorgonians and a Hamlet...Complete with a colorful palette of maroalgae…

Take out the Blackcap Basslett and make it Gramma dejongi!

Well here's a simplistic look at my list:

1. 300G Full Reef In-Wall

2. 300G Aggressive Predator tank

3. Live food cultures with phyto, rotifers and pods

4. Clownfish breeding system - just to say I can and did. Not to make any money, just to say I bred clowns for giggles...

5. Scott, I am with you on the island scape tank. This would be truly amazing with NPS under the island overhangs, overflow built into the island base, 360 degree walk around tank... LED projection lights like Kessils in the ceiling to make it a super clean looking tank. Plant live vegetation on the island and claim it is for "air quality control"

My wife keeps saying she wants a tank too when we get a house. The only thing is she wants it to be a wrap-around tank making up two walls around a hot tub in the basement of our future house... Her goals are loftier than mine!

mine is kinda simple. Dig out the basement (right below my tank) and have a gnarly big refugium with lots of maco algea and weird snails and maybe a dragon face pipefish to feast on the pods....

Haha you did it! :thumb:

Mine is:
1. Jellyfish DIY tumbler tank
2. Dwarf seahorse and single gorgonian pico
3. Brackish water part land shallow tank
4. Bare-bottom with a zoa garden covering the bottom glass (might be in my next upgrade)
5. GSP on the bottom instead of zoas^^^ (this in the next upgrade or the zoas, probably gonna go with this because it's easier)
6. Brackish fish in a SW tank (I'll have a figure eight puffer in my next upgrade, heard they're very reef safe)

A friend of mine on facebook has a simple rimless cube with a school of chromis and GSP on the rock. It looks almost too clean.

Cephalopod Madness..... Because who wouldn't want Cthulhu as a pet?

1) Octopus Tank (1 octo only)
2) Cuttlefish Tank (multiple cuttles)

Really liking the diversity of stuff on people's lists! We all bring different talents and goals to the table, so it's fun to see what we're all looking for..and inspiring!

I see a lot of us think a like:

- Deepwater Caribbean tank for moustache jawfish - (30g cube in progress) might actually plumb in a 2nd cube for a blue-spotted jawfish to go side by side.
- Shallow volcano tank (thinking Aussie/indo corals) - (24x24x12 rimless in progress) w/plumbed in frag tank
- Freshwater paludarium - (45 gallon pentagon tank)

Long Term plans:
- Cuttlefish tank
- Moon jelly tumbler (DIY)

I've thought about paludariums myself. I've also got ideas on splitting an aquascape across multiple tanks... like 3 tanks all the same size side by side with a little space between them.

I've been wondering about fusing ADA planted tank aquascape ideas for marine. Such as a large tank maybe 200+ gallons, 5 dry rock pinnacles, green star polyp corals to cover the rock completely. Have 3-5 acropora staghorn center piece. Then add 5 bicolor goatfish, 7 blue regal tangs and 12 silver schooling cardinals. Or switch it to blue star polyps, and yellow tangs. Simple.

for the 10 gal: create an aquascape with dominant tonga branch that looks like a three branching into the water. DBS but with patches of zoa gardens in each corner. Kenya coral/ tree corals on the perimeter closer to sand bed. goniopora strategically placed on tonga branch. Seagrass in any open space. Dragonet specific only (don't know which dragonet yet) or small pipefish specific only or flaming prawn goby specific only- can't decide
- 8 gal dwarf seahorse. Kind of bare bottom with only 0.5 inch of black sand. Red grape algae covers the bottom and anchored with rubble rocks. Big rock in center with blue scroll or something similar in the middle.

You could do the Amazon River biotope. Just get slightly larger tetras than Neons, and drop the knifefish entirely. Extremely predatory beasties, they are.

I just want a nice, happy, healthy reef where everyone gets along with no real bullying.

And don't forget the Archer in your Brackish, they are the coolest fish ever! Make wonderful and fun pets! Even shot you in the eye with a mouthful of water every once in a while

1. Go through the mountain of aquarium crap I've collected over the last 20 years and organize it.

2. Move to Easter Island
3. Catch lots of Easter Island Pygmy Angels
4. Sell said angels to everyone except Scott.
