The Official R2R Mantis Shrimp Thread!

Im still waiting for liveaquaria to get another peacock on their site. I missed the last one they had. I think they list them as clown mantis shrimp

So do mantis shrimp need a covered aquarium?

I have been watching tons of videos on these beautifull little guys and i set up a 10 gallon just for one.
I know nothing of them but what to feed them, and would like some general knowledge, also i cant find one anywhere!!!
It doesnt have to be colorfull just a mantis shrimp :D

Some can jump very well. A closed lid is always a good idea. Not likely though. I think O. japonicus can jump very far out of water.

If you're looking for one try, bluezooaquatics.com, liveaquaria.com, tbssaltwater.com, ccritters.com, sealifeinc.net just to name a few. Check out Roy's list on tank sizes and feeding requirements. Roy's List of Stomatopods for the Aquarium

Ok cool! Thanks man!

It had me worried for a bit..

Oh yeh. How long should I wait til I feed him after they molt?? Wasn't sure if the new smasher is strong enough to hit?

I'd wait until it starts coming out and acting normal again. Usually less than a week. If it's out and around you can try to feed it softer food like shrimp if it will take it. If it won't take it then just wait.

Yeh he likes live food lol

I tried feeding it raw shrimp before and it just threw it back at me haha

If you're feeding live food then you don't have any worries. It will eat when it gets ready! :)

My Peacock Mantis Shrimp tried to take out my Lionfish this morning. Had to put the Lionfish in a quarantine tank for it to try to recover.

It's official. I thought I had baby Wennerae in my tank but they were only visible briefly when trying to get macro pics of my feather duster. Kept seeing these little tiny almost transparent things crawling around and over the featherduster. Tried to get pics of them but couldn't get any good pics because they were just too small although tail looked very similar in shape to the mantis. Then this morning while watching my mantis eat I saw one of them without having to use the extreme close up lens. Just briefly.. and not sure how many but I did see one. long and skinny, maybe 4 or 5 millimeters.

Does anyone know how I should care for them? Or am I completely mistaken?

Sorry to hear that :( could it have been a bad molt or something?

My mantis is doing pretty good, I'm feeding him a small crayfish today
