And if it doesn't develop a green rim is it still a watermelon? I'm new to this game. ;p

My hubby doesn't even know I got it yet. haha!! Although I know part of him is happy that I'm the one hiding new corals from him since he got me into this hobby. lol

I will place $$$ that if fraged it would start a green ring, I have an Acan Echinata, that is really sweet with bright green green eyes and orangish body, the frag always have green growth edge.

I'm sure hopeful! When I saw it at my friend's store the other day I knew I wasn't going to be able to leave without it.
I've got to frag it anyway because its grown vertical on its rock. So both of the sides aren't getting the light they could if I was able to lay them flat. Only the pink part is exposed to enough light to keep the color.

I think I remember telling someone a few weeks ago that if I got a watermelon in the future I would sell the frags for a lot less than $250-300 for 1/4" frag. So ppphhbbbtt!! to you. hahaha!

The reason why most of my echinos are so big is I don't frag very often. I usually lose about 1/4 of the frags and they take a long time to fully color up.

My hot lava frags take at least 3-4 months to fully gain their color back. Anyone have any tricks/tips?

Wow! Brent, that sucks! What went wrong? I sometimes have a hard time keeping my frags alive but my mother colonies usually heal over in a matter of days. Of course I only cut frags around the growing rim with a pair of scissors (I realize my methods may be a bit unorthadox). I've never liked using the dremel cause it ends of getting coral gook all over me and really smells. For this one thing I am rather girly. I really can't take the smell while dremeling corals. I prefer my handy hammer and flat head screwdriver. ;p

Brent, so sorry to hear about your losses.

Reef goddess, I'm a wussy when it comes to fragging anything but zoas. I plan on have my local fragging guru come over to help once things really get out of hand. :)

Here is my grape watermelon

And this is the tyree watermelon I just picked up from Mike at the Captive Reef a few weeks ago. Really bad picture.....

Nice! I'm pretty ruthless with everything but my lords and echinos. They just grow so much slower than montis, zoos, leathers, etc.

Let's get this thread going again!!!

YO!!!! bumpity bump on this thread... let's see updated pics of your watermelon chalices... :)

I also have one that I have been coloring up for a while that appears to be very similar to this older Tyree piece.

He called it the
Lime Eye Orpheensis

It's one of his retired AE corals.

Keep my TEC WM 24" directly under 250 watt Phoenix bulbs. Doesn't seem to change much for me under different lighting.
