As a work to build my system, I have been spending countless hours, watching YouTube videos for encouragement, but primarily for education. It’s great to see what others are doing. There is so much to learn.
One of the things that has stood out to me with these videos displaying gorgeous tanks Is that some give a very unrealistic expectation of what could be done, and in what time frame.
Two different videos come to mind, with gorgeous looking tanks that were chuck full of good size coral. One has been up for three months, and the other had been up for five months. As my wife sees this video, she is wondering just how long it will take for our tank to look something like that? I have to explain how they have spent more on one coral colony than I have on 10 Frags. I feel like I have really invested a lot to get going, but some of these tanks have spent 10 or 20 times that money, and then half the time.
If you are new to the hobby, enjoy the journey and don’t get caught up on a perceived endpoint or finish line. There is plenty to enjoy along the way with small victories and learning from mistakes. In many ways, a reef tank is like getting a puppy or a kitten. Realistically it’s a many year commitment that grows in satisfaction and enjoyment over time.
