Well, I got some update on my mangroves. Apparently, my manual pollination trial was a success this spring. Cleaning up my mangroves this holiday Sunday, I find three seed pods on my Black mangrove. My Red mangrove also start to grow, sending additional leaves.

Now once the pods matures I will try to germinate and grow the pod to complete the cycle of fully captive grown Black Mangrove. New plant complete from seed grown Black mangrove.

Hi, I know this is many months old but would planting them in a pot full of sand and topped with coral rubble work? Thinking to have the pot about an inch underwater. Not much information for planting avicennia mangroves and they are the only ones allowed in new zealand. Also could I start with an established plant or should I start with a seed- I know they are quite hard to acclimate but there are tonnes growing near my house in 34 ppt salinity and I could easily just grab one. Beautiful mangroves by the way!

You shouldn’t pull an established plant. In many places that’s both ecologically harmful as well as illegal. Start from collected seeds.

It isn't in my country - every part of the shoreline is covered with them all along the north island - also the area is the same salinity

Well, lost 3 of the black mangroves (Avicennia germinans). Turns out they were infested with spider mites...

Oriental mangroves (Bruguiera gymnorhiza) are doing pretty well, they started stretching for the light, so I added another light today.

And the sea grape tree (Coccoloba uvifera) finally arrived today! I got it potted and we'll see how it does!

Really interested to see how that sea grape does. Are you planting it mangrove-style? Or will it be up and out of the water.

I have a couple of Bruguiera racemosa doing well after a year of growth. I had more, but lost several due to my crowded conditions here.

Is this all marine? Or do you have brackish water as well? A really cool thing you can try for brackish is Pandanus tectorius. That would go well with the Coccoloba actually.

The sea grape is growing with the bottom half of the roots submerged. Not planning on submerging the trunk, as most photos show it growing above high tide, just with roots in saline conditions.

Salinity is currently at 1.010 as the tank just finished going through hyposalinity, but will slowly be raised up to 1.025, as I will be moving some motile inverts and hopefully corals into this setup.

Some of the leaves of my mangrove trees, have these brown spots. That seem to cause the leaves to curl and turn brown then eventually cause the leaves to die and fall off.
In doing some research, it looks like some kind of fungal infection that is specific to mangrove trees. Anyone seen this before?

Anyone rig up any aesthetically pleasing grow lights? I'm looking to grow one next to make tank but I'm stuck on how to make the light/lights look good.

Just get a nice 6500k led spotlight. I have a 30w over mine and it looks decent.

This light was great for me and my mangrove. Made it look real full and green. I attached the light to a hook on the ceiling and had it hanging above the tank and reef light. If you can somehow hide the chord, it can look really good.

I used a panel like that for my Refugio for years, for the price it is a great light. Here is my current setup. You can see the spotlight at the top of the picture

It is just a solid grow light. Works well for a mangrove that is not giant (1+foot wide), works great for macros/fuges, and is a great grow light for house plants! I used it over my carnivorous plants once I was done using it with the mangrove. Grew VFTs + Nepenthes very well.

Proud to announce after 3-4 years starting as just a sprout with no leaves my mangrove finally has split into two branches on top!! I have it in a 5 gallon nano tank. I could pour in 5-10x the amount of reefeoids and other foods for the tank, but the mangrove is so large and rooted it absorbs any nutrients in the tank and keeps it at zero. It makes the tank super difficult to keep any coral alive.

Anyone run into this issue with a large & rooted mangrove?? The third photo is the same size nano next to the mangrove tank. Basically treated the same.

I have to dose nitrates and phosphates to keep my nutrients up

Good call. That's what I was contemplating. Think I found a good looking sconce that will work.
