this is actually my current guideline for what i want my build tolook like. i want to go with pendant lighting for aestics but what could i use for the first couple months until the kessil budget is available? how poorly would they do under reef lights opposed to Fresh water lights ?

I’ve been searching high and low for a decent sized mangrove for my build (Mangrove lagoon) with no luck and antsy to get moving with my final vision pulled the trigger on another set of eBay plants. Debated for a week which ones to get and finally decided to go with the description of “fully developed young plants with 2-6 leaves” thinking it would give me a good start on a nice canopy of leaves. I have been super excited to get them and get my build closer to my vision. Well, plants came today-and I’ll just say sometimes size matters! Most of my plants with roots are barely hitting 6”-7”. In all the photos I’ve looked at and seen, I didn’t even realize the propugules could be so short, I guess a product of my land locked naivety. So now I’m loaded with mangroves that I am not even sure what to do with! At least they’re healthy. Any thoughts or experience on how long it will take for them to add some height?

Not sure about mangroves but if you want a plant to stretch, give insufficient florescent light OR use a high wattage HPS and hang the light 24"+.

On other thoughts in the thread. Plants are all kinda similar. If you want bushy, look up the FIM or topping method, they are completely different, and use MH or a bluer light with high par/pur. If you live in one of those states, a good cannabis grower will know what works.

I had my mangrove under a cheap Home Depot grow bulb for about a year. It was enough to keep the plant alive but once I switched to the Kessils it’s really taken off. I do run the Kessil Tuna Sun so it gets the full daylight spectrum. Not ideal for corals but looks good on my macro tank.

I’ve found that dosing iron and manganese have made the biggest difference in my plants growth. One thing I struggle with is getting nutrients and lighting right to make a happy mangrove without crashing the tank.

HOw many of you growing mangroves, also have SPS in an attached system?

There seems to be a persistant 'understanding' that mangroves produce phenols that affect SPS growth. Im not sure how teue that os but didn't want to limit my options in future

Sorry, I don’t have any experience mixing mangroves and SPS. Interested to hear what others have to say though.

Awesome! So glad to see this thread. I just added my mangroves on Tuesday. Using Brightwell Aquatics Koral Lagoon Substrat in my Fuge which is supposed to be great for mangroves. Can't wait to see how these guys do! Does anyone add anything specific to give them extra nutrients? I have Brightwell Aquatics Ferrion that I add for the Chaeto and I believe the mangroves will benefit from it as well.

Mine has not outgrown its fuge yet, so I cannot share my experience with what will happen. Would suspect some lateral roots would start to show as it would in nature as it looks to reach more substrate

I too use iron. Ferrion by Brightwell Aquatics to be specific. I also test weekly for iron with the Red Sea Coral colors kit so it doesn't get too high. I shoot for around .1-.15. Too much iron can cause run away algae growth. Haven't tried Manganese. I should have went with Brightwell ChaetoGro instead of Ferrion as it has both Iron and Manganese in it but I didn't have the mangroves at that point of purchase. I have my mangroves in a hang on back refugium so they may get a little spill over light from the AI Prime over the main tank but I run a 5W grow light over my fuge at night. Hoping it gives them enough light. They are new additions to the fuge (2 days) so I'll be seeing soon if they're happy or not.

Hi All, just stumbled onto this thread while starting my Mangrove research. I recently read Julian Sprung's Guide to Mangroves and have been reading countless threads on here. Before I get too far down the rabbit hole I have two questions.

The first is does a Mangrove need an independent light source or if the tank is by a window will that be sufficient? The mangrove will be in the back sump section so the roots will not get any light however the top will.

The second is will one Mangrove in a 30 gallon tank provide any beneficial nutrient exporting? In reading Julian's guide it would appear the answer is no, but I thought I would check with others as well.

IMO you will have to provide a light source. My red mangrove gets plenty of natural sunlight, but receives 6 hrs of 250 watts MH.
Mine grows faster in substrate, so consider that. No the roots do not need light.
As for nutrient control, as you already mentioned there is no significant uptake.
I love mangroves for the look.
Currently I am trying to replicate a 14 gallon mangrove and macro algae tank like Julian Sprungs. That tank has fascinated me for over 20 yrs.

Thanks for the reply the reason I ask is there was a pictures posted on a previous page that had the tank in the window, but a light below the leaves. Typically with plants you want the light on the leaves so I wasn't sure if these were somehow different. I assume this light was for the other Macro algae than.
