My Tank Thread
My Aquarium Showcase
We have for months and even years seen the many members on here battling algae, nuisance and hair algae and having little success.
There are many ways to win the war but with changes in chemistry, CUC's and Patience.
Two of known Industry manufacturers recognized this apparently as they are releasing the chemical warfare in a bottle to control this.
First is Two Little Fishes, known for their reactors, chemicals and nifty aquarium gadgets. Phosban-L is a new liquid phosphate reducer that contains a Lanthanum Chloride additive. Phosphate is one of our biggest enemies when it comes to having a clean and healthy reef tank with minimal algae growth. Dosing Lanthanum to aquarium water is much more economical and can actually be more easily automated since you can use a programmable doser for regular additions. One warning is that the lanthanum is capable of bringing phosphates levels down to around 0.1 ppm while GFO will scavenge all available PO4 down to near undetectable levels.
Two Little Fishies pioneered the use of granular ferric oxide (GFO) with phosban and this is still one of the most effective ways to reduce phosphates on average home tanks. But if you have a very large tank or exceptionally high phosphate input, GFO can get really expensive real fast making this new product a consideration.
Two Little Fishies is making Phospban-L in two sizes as a liquid in a 500ml and one gallon size and a powdered form to mix yourself.
Fauna Marine has also released the RED-X line which looks very promising. Fauna Marin is a German company looking to help aquarists get rid of nuisance algae like green and red cyanobacteria, mild dinoflagellate infestations, gold and armor algae and diatoms. DID YOU READ THAT- CYNO !!!!
RED X Is a special formula that prevents algae growth in the aquarium in a biological / organic way and is very gentle to aquarium inhabitants. it doesn’t contain antibiotics or other prescription meds MAKING IT reef safe for all your inhabitants including fish, corals and invertebrates. RED X is made from three simple ingredients made of water, sodium chloride and salicylic acid.
Product seems pretty straight forward recommending 10ml per 100 liters for six days and results showing up aboutaround five days thereafter. Fauna Marin recommends no water changes, carbon, phosphate removers or other absorption media and to turn off any ozone or UV for the 11 days of treatment.
