WARNING: long unorganized noob post
Edit: New nano reefer here

Tank: Innovative Marine Nuvo Peninsula 14 gallon
Light: Iphone flashlight 1st week and now hipargero..(will explain)
Flow: Stock return pump & Hydor nano power head
Heater: Neotherm 150
Accessories:: filter floss, purigen, phosguard, Seachem Matrix
Additives: Instant Ocean salt mix, ro/di water
& bio spiral (bacteria booster)

Let’s talk about my zoas ongoing journey through hell.

Okay so I bought a zoanthid for my nano tank about a week into the nitrogen cycle:) yes I’m evil I feel horrible I’ve been using Seachem Prime to supposedly combat this for the time being. The a/c in my house was ****ed (has been fixed just today new a/c) so he has been experiencing severe temperature swings for 1 1/2 weeks 78 in the morning climbing to 84 and not lowering until I get home 10:00 p.m. and put frozen water bottles in there bringing it down to around 78 over an hour.

Additionally my AI Prime had connection issues (didn’t think to test the light first) and suffice to say tried to fix it but probably broke it more, rushed a Hipargero light in through Amazon. Up until then (3days ago) I have been leaving my iPhone flashlight leaning up against the glass all night long and the zoa would open up fully but definitely not as vibrant as he was in the LFS.

Once I switched to the reef light (hipargero on Monday, he has stayed closed, I ran it most of the day Monday medium intensity white spectrum and medium blue. I had my dad turn it off around 5 p.m. out of fear of too much light and wanting to acclimate somewhat, got home and changed the settings to second lowest possible amount of white and maximum blue, ran that 10:00 p.m. until 2 a.m. to no avail then turned it off.

Today (Tuesday I decided to leave the light off completely and surprisingly my dad after fixing the a/c says he has opened up. No pictures available until I get home tonight.

Things to note: last night I removed the purigen, filter floss, and phosguard. Skimmer is still running however(not actually functioning though haven’t had time to figure it out.

Reasoning is because I am scared the water is too clean?

My plan from now on is to run the light setup heavy blue low white 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. cause those are the hours I’m home. (Eventually putting this on a simple timer). Also eventually going to fix the AI Prime

My question is why won’t he open up under a more appropriate light, I have somewhat fed him reef roids twice but he couldn’t really hold onto it once the pumps were turned back on after feeding. Btw both pumps are pointed at the surface in opposite directions on opposite corners of the tank. More accurately they are pointed at the opposing walls. (Lengthwise)

But since he was not opening up under the reef light which should be far superior to the flashlight on an iPhone I got paranoid last night and did a Seachem reef dip for a 5 minutes and bare with me but also 3% hydrogen peroxide for a few minutes and even pure distilled water for a few minutes in no particular order before he was put back in the tank I rinsed him in tap water... and then finally distilled water. He let off a slime coat? And I THINK I saw a super tiny yellow caterpillar looking thing fall off into the water during the distilled water dip but I could be imagining things and it could have been debris. I didn’t closely inspect just dumped it into the sink.

Anyways... besides being put into a toxic environment with fluctuating temperature and bizzare lighting conditions

Ive been testing every day with API master test kit, ammonia been hovering around .25ppm nitrite seems to rise and fall no nitrates I don’t think (shoulda wrote them down...) so obviously the nitrogen cycle isn’t done.

I’ve also poured a cup of ocean water in there (I live on the east coast in Georgia and the water was probably brackish but I just wanted to seed the water with some diversity and hoping this will somehow balance itself out. Mostly wanted to boost the bacteria although unless otherwise advised I will be buying some Seachem satability.

But wait there’s more! Salinity has been 1.020 the whole time, slowly trying to bring it up but it’s taking much More salt (instant ocean) than I thought.
Was adding spoonfuls and doing nothing, now adding 1/4 cup daily (I know your probably not suppose to mix in the tank :D if it matters I was adding it ontop of the filter floss so it had to go through a bunch of stuff before making it to the main section.

Anyways this post is asking for advice on how to proceed from here this little guy has not been happy at all. Probably not very short of living through hell.

More specifically are there any suggested setting for the hipargero light? Can’t find anything on the internet. It’s mount is also awful so it’s very close to the water and planning on raising this to 20” ish whenever I figure out how to.

And is there any advice on what to do if you have a coral during the nitrogen cycle? No fish btw

I plan to run the lights through the night since that’s when I’m home, I’ve done about 5 gallons of water change 2 different times over the last week (14g tank) going to do another one tonight and try to be more careful and accurate about it.

something I’m trying to get at and understand is why the zoa was opening up at first and is now closing and staying closed even under a better light and after a water change, also is that I added the biospira initially so I thought that was suppose to skip the cycle, should I leave the purigen or phosguard in there, is the imbalance in not having a fish supplying ammonia? Were the temperature swings too severe ? Papers I skimmed over said corals live in up to 84 degree water
Are phosguard and purigen removing too much stuff
Should I be feeding the tank or can the coral not survive off light and what’s is supplied in the salt mix?

Will update how he’s doing when I get home

Welcome to R2R!

Zoa being unhappy could be due to ammonia, low nutrients, too little or too much light, acclimation time...a lot of things could apply to your tank at this stage.

Since you’re dosing prime, your api kit is giving you a false positive. Sorry if I missed but do you have any nitrates?

It shouldn’t, but softies like nutrient rich water. You should just let the cycle complete without skimming or filtration.

0.25 even if a false positive seems pretty low.

I’d add a piece of shrimp or some food and then add biospira to jumpstart the cycle.

update: did a 15 min Seachem reef dip and was able to flake some stuff off which after hours of searching I think is a fungus idk I’m at a loss currently they are back in the tank but don’t look good
