Can someone help me out with if this is a male McCosker wrasse, I see the smallest spike/filament on top so not sure if just transitioning, seems like if male at this size it should have a longer spike ontop? Or can someone drop the ID page link if better.

For those wrasse lovers who like their fish BIG, the local shop just got in a 6 inch Maori wrasse. They get to three feet and several hundred pounds.

Sometimes I see the Red-breasted wrasse referred to as the maori, is it that? That classic large maori wrasse AFAIK is endagered and illegal to collect and sell.

Cheilinus undulatus has several common names, Humphead, Napoleon and Maori according to my references. Bottom line is that it is a three foot, several hundred pound fish that should NOT be in a Pet shop.

I'm just surprised its actually one of those, and not another species of fish labeled maori. From what I've seen they are very illegal to transport and bring in.

Did you actually see the fish in person? I can't imagine they would risk everything and also advertise this fish.

They are a high end store that carries a lot of fish not normally seen. A few other fish on their new fish list are red breast wrasse ( I'm not familiar), several types of sweetlips, Fu Manchus, and groupers. I'm curious and may drive over just to take a picture tomorrow.

Sooooo can i get a second opinion on this?
My adorned wrasse (same one who was biteing toadstool) is now tearing gonipora polyps. Like biteing off the little tentacles around the mouth. I watch him rip and eat the floating neon green bits!!

How often are you feeding?

My exquisite wrasse is a pig, and if it’s feeling bored and slightly hungry, he sometimes starts to find some things looking enticing. Especially anything that is flowing/movement (like a Goni or toadstool polyp).

I feed pretty often to keep my coral beauty behaving like a good citizen, but also has the benefit of keeping the piglet of a wrasse from “curiously sampling” other things.

Took a ride to check out the fish. I'll let the wrasse experts make a final decision. The place did also have two red breast wrasse

The first wrasse doesn’t appear to me as though it’s a chalasai but could be the lighting and the last wrasse is actually Paracheilinus flavianalis and not a carpenteri

I see the flavianalis now after googling. Sold as a carpenteri...

As for the chaliasi, it has a pink head, so petty sure on that one. Guess we'll see if it changes as it grows.

I feed pretty often to keep my coral beauty behaving like a good citizen, but also has the benefit of keeping the piglet of a wrasse from “curiously sampling” other things.

I feed at 8-10-12-2-4-6 with a plank feeder a mix of pellets(TDO,NYOS, Hikari s, sakihikari carnivore) and Reefjerky for 20 seconds. I will also supplement with frozen mysis/rods blend.
I do see him grazeing the rocks and bullying the leapard wrasse. But once the polyps are torn free he will actively hunt and eat all the bits. I just have never heard of wrasse eating coral so it was a shock.

It’s not several hundred pounds at 3ft but when they reach 5-7ft…

What has the experience been with a mandarin dragonet with a leopard wrasse?
I would like to add a spotted mandarin when the pod population is back up in my tank, but I'm concerned as to how much competition the leopard will be for the mandarin?
