The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Get it! Get it! It is so beautiful!!!!!
That’s not what I meant :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

It’s so tempting but I know they’re temperamental

Someone talk me out of it… a Roseafascia.

Also still thinking of ideas to “replace” the Chloroptasaurus.

The last fish on my “holy grail” bucket list…

I was going to finally get one not too long ago, but their large size (larger than most fairies) and aggressiveness made me talk myself out of it until I have a larger tank again with fish that have a similar mean streak (all my current friends are way to peaceful to stand up to one of those).

So dang beautiful, but alas, maybe the time is not right - but then again… they sure are pretty… so maybe you should..

I think you came to the wrong place for that!

Have to re-share my favorite wrasse, my exquisite. He has really put on size and colored up the last few weeks. Hard to capture, but man this guy is getting colorful.

Well, that spine has crossed out one fish!

I was shifting the sand to remove craters and out came the Kaleidos for a good few seconds. He’s grown and is nice and fat so I don’t know when he’s been out but he has been feeding at some point.

And his colours are stunning now, they went from this

And are starting to look more vibrant and like the one in my LFS’s display! His blue has become much more vibrant and the orange is starting to glow.

Look at the colours this edwardi has gained!!

His pink and yellow mask is truly coming in now.

And one wrasse I don’t show much at all but still love, my Carpenters Flasher. Remember when I got him as a young female in September/August?

Melanurus tends to be one of the more aggressive Halichoeres. I'd add it last or at the same time as the other Halichoeres.

Look into:
Halichoeres biocellatus
Halichoeres cosmetus
Halichoeres timorensis
Halichoeres iridis
Halichoeres chrysus
Halichoeres leucoxanthus
Halichoeres marginatus
Halichoeres rubricephalus

Avoid:
Halichoeres bivittatus
Halichoeres chloropterus
Halichoeres cyanocephalus
Halichoeres hortulanus
Halichoeres radiatus
Halichoeres garnoti

All of these are nice and colorful, and tend to be at least a little more laid back than H. melanurus. They should do fine if added at the same time or before the melanurus.

As far as non-Halichoeres wrasses, any other sand sleepers (Macropharyngodon, Anampses, and Pseudojuloides) should be added before a melanurus.

Rock and crevice sleeping wrasses (Cirrhilabrus, Paracheilinus, Wetmorella, Pseudocheilinops) can go in pretty much whenever, though I would still try not to add any after an adult melanurus has become well-established in a tank.

Well, I picked up a Radiant Wrasse (about 2.5"), two Rhomboids (3" and 2.5"), and they are now in display and doing well. I did get rid of a PBT that was showing some aggression.

Currently have in the QT system a small melanurus terminal male about 2.5" and a biocellatus redline wrasse about 3". However, the redline is already trying to peck at the melanurus. I watched closely and it keeps harassing the melanurus. I divided the tank for now. Is that a bad sign? Will they be okay in the 180G or should I trade away the redline?

I am thinking going with a timor instead of the redline?

If I keep the redline, and still get a timor, will I be okay in a 180?

Will have Melanurus (2.5"), Redline (3"), Radiant (2.5"), Timor (2.5-3"), Rhomboild Male (3"), Rhomboid Female (2.5")

It should be but I know melanurus and Timor can be quite bossy as they age - if the rhomboids are established before the Timor and melanurus then it’ll be alright IME.

So, Dr Reef fixed all the issues I pointed out in their store. They even renamed the yellow coris wrasse to the yellow chrysus wrasse... Why do I feel so guilty though??

Anyway, I will say that even when I've made fun of their bad IDing, they have always had the best customer support, and I've only gotten healthy fish from them. This is really a store I recommend to the USavians on here.

If I’m honest, when I’m labelling fish in my LFS and I see ‘yellow coris wrasse’ I always change it to Chrysus.

I did it…
I went to my LFS and picked up 2 new wrasses. One was a Cirrhilabrus and the other is a Macropharyngodon.

The Cirrhilabrus is a much more purple/blue species and the Macropharyngodon is a female of a more red species.

I have also just ordered two wrasse (and an angel) both of which have been on the wishlist for a while. A filamented flasher and a hooded flame fairy
Efatensis is the best wrasse! Cant wait to see it :)
