The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Is it Wrasse Wednesday? I got all 3 (plus the Fox) in a single shot! Ok, it's an FTS but they're all huddled together around the Foxface.

He's a fatty! Getting fully striped face too. Greens and Pinks are really starting to show up. I'm pretty sure my mel is still transitioning or he's a very low key male. Bright colors but his face is still mostly straight lines like a Juvi.

The pictoides died during acclimation. It looked ok this morning, though very lethargic like when i received. Wouldn't swim around but was breathing normally and was acclimating it very slowly. This afternoon it was just dead. And to answer slockes question, it didn't have an overbite. I think yours is a female. Mine was definitely a male and it looks a bit different. I'll try and describe it, since i can't be bothered trying to get videos to work. the bottom half of the fish is white, not yellowish. There is a thin yellow stripe about halfway up the body and in the centre of the fish. Then there is a thick black stripe along the entire length of the fish roughly the width of the fishs eye, which it transects. Directly above and below that on the head only are some very thin electric blue lines. There is a thin white stripe above and finally the top of the animal along the edges of the dorsal thin is a salmon pink. The tail is a clear pinkish-brown.

On a positive note, i had some wrasse arrive today. Airport to airport, so they're all very healthy and alert since they've been in the bag about 12 hours. I have a transitioning blunthead wrasse (Thalassoma amblycephalum) small male melanurus, large female Anampses meleagrides, small female Anampses neoguinacus, and an initial phase Gunthers wrasse (Pseudolabrus guentheri) which along with the blunthead and meleagrides is about 11cm. The gunthers is absolutely stunning. They're not as brightly coloured as some other wrasse but the sleek but not overly slender body along with the muted red and green is really beautiful. I will try and get a video of them but considering my luck with videos it might not work.

I have one carpenters flasher wrasse and one ornate leopard in my tank and im considering adding a halichoeres chrysus. The flasher is full grown but timid, the leopard is very small (a bit smaller than 2"). They dont seem to care about one another. I want to get a small chrysus, do you think it will work out well?

Other fish are:
Ocellaris pair
Royal Gramma
Fire goby Nemateleotris magnifica
Pajama cardinal

Tank is very peaceful overall so i dont want to mess it up. The royal gramma is the most territorial of them all.

The gunthers really is nicer looking in person, the pale blotches are more light bluish.
edit: ughhhh the video didn't even attach AGAIN.

Really cool! I’m a bit jealous
I'm tempted to just let the gunthers out tomorrow. The blunthead wouln't stop moving too, so i felt bad and ended up just letting it out at the same time as the anampses and melanurus.

How large is your tank? Chrysus is a very mild mannered wrasse and would work well. The clowns and grama can be aggressive so if the tank is large enough the chrysus should do fine. Leucoxanthus would be another good choice.

LFS had some fun friends in today. I had time to stop in between my 2 patients. I really need a bigger tank...

Not a wrasse, but one they don't have in often and he posed for me.

Gonna need some IDs on some of these wrasses! #1/2, #4, #10/11?

Also, what in the world are they feeding that filefish? My understanding is they only eat coral.
