I lost my large male lineatus the other night. Was feeding my tank with one of the screens to the side. I looked down to get more mysis and heard a big splash. I new immediately what happened. It's a builtin tank and I couldn't find the fish anywhere. My aussie was in the room so I don't know... Lost my Vivian a few months back the same way. Need to get a feeding port.

I believe I have a secured top, but I didn’t know that wrasse may jump with that short time. I have never own a wrasse, this giving me a second thought in getting a wrasse. I am looking at the naoko wrasse

This was the fate of my last Naoko. He jumped out to to his death in the AM when I lifted one side of the lid up to dump the food in. All of this did not take more than 3-5 seconds at the most. He jumped up and landed on the other side (tank with middle metal brace thus 2 lids). I was in a hurry that morning and just quickly dump the food in. I found him like this that evening, on top of the lid.
This is how quick and fast these wrasse jump. I hear them hit the top almost daily.

That's exactly how I lost my Vivien. It really is that quick during a feeding frenzy.

This seems like the right place for this post - maybe.

We have 2 Melanurus Wrasse - male and female - EJ (about 5") & Ruby (about 3'). We thought Ruby had died under the sand as she hid for 47 days after 1st introduction but we had a tank issue earlier this week and wound up tearing almost the entire tank apart and redoing it and suddenly Ruby is out and about like she has always been there. EJ gave chase initially but now they just hangout together. We also have a very small 6-line - maybe 1" - who is a model citizen does not chase anyone - just pokes around the rocks all day looking for snacks. The only problem is we can not keep any shrimp now we 2 very active Melanurus - they examine anything new that goes into the tank to ensure that I didn't miss anything in the dips and they pick the rocks, glass and sand all day long. They will both pick up mouth fulls of sand and spit it back out.

My question - are there any shrimp type critters that would be safe with these 3? We have tried skunk cleaner shrimps, fire shrimp, peppermint shrimp and pistol shrimp and they all become wrasse snacks. We won't get rid of the wrasses as they do a wonderful job getting rid of vermitid snails as well as anything else they find including feather dusters and they are amazing to watch glide around the tank all day. I have seen EJ running around with a micro brittle starfish hanging out of his mouth but they seem to leave the Fancy Brittle and Linicka starfish alone.

Are you adding the shrimp while your mels are out cruising for food or were the shrimp already in the tank and the mels decided to make meals of them?

I've been noticing that our wrasse has been living in among a colony of palys! here we just dumped some brine shrimp in the tank and he was poking his head out to get some.

Are you adding the shrimp while your mels are out cruising for food or were the shrimp already in the tank and the mels decided to make meals of them?

Shrimp were already in the tank and when I added new I waited til the Mels were down for the night. They wait til they molt and then get them when they are waiting for the new exoskelton to firm up.

Ah ok your mels have learned that shrimp are an easy food source so it’s very doubtful you’ll be able to keep shrimp with them again. BTW, post some pics of your wrasses - we love seeing them!

What kind of palys are those cause I have the exact same ones

I dont know... I got them for free about a year and a half ago. That probably tells us where they stand on the scale of prestige!! . They are mostly brown but when I upgraded recently to Radions, they now have a blueish hue to them. I figure they are going to end up a pain one of these days cause they grow like crazy but for now I'm just glad for each thing in the tank that is happy and healthy .

Ah ok your mels have learned that shrimp are an easy food source so it’s very doubtful you’ll be able to keep shrimp with them again. BTW, post some pics of your wrasses - we love seeing them!

1st with Tang is OCD - cleaner wrasse
2nd is EJ - male Mel
3rd is 6 pack our 6 line wrasse
4th is Ruby - female Mel who disappeared for 47 days when we first got her than magically reappeared like she had never been gone

Anyone in here with a Radiant Wrasse have issues keeping them with Nassarius snails? I have quite a few Nassarius snails and I'm looking at adding a Radiant to the tank.

My radiant pays zero attention to my snails. Radiants are more invert friendly, but no guarantee it won’t eat your snails. The small risk is totally worth it to have a radiant.

Can anyone help with ID? When I originally picked it up from the LFS, it was just labeled as Fairy/Flasher Wrasse and was pale pink. LFS guy said it was a red fin but that doesn’t appear right. First two spikes of dorsal fin are longer, tried to a picture quick so apologies for the poor photography! LongFin Fairy maybe?

Yes, it’s Cirrhilabrus Rubeus (longfin fairy).
