To me it looks like a transitioning phase fish. Most likely Pseudojuloides cerasinus or Pseudojuloides splendens. Do you know where the fish was collected?

Edit: Pseudojuloides cerasinus is only found in Hawaii (thanks reclassification!) So I would say Pseudojuloides splendens.

Correct - And the only other species COMMONLY seen in captivity is P. splendens. P. severnsi is seen but is not as common.

Wish P. cerasinus was available still though, my LFS has an adult male in their main display and he’s beautiful.

I have returned to this glorious thread... I got this guy from my importer last week. I was told it's a 'pencil wrasse'. Can anyone help with ident.

Top pic is a paracheilinus bellae aka Bell's flasher wrasse. @i cant think correctly identified the bottom pic as cirrhilabrus johnsoni aka Johnson's fairy wrasse.

I was close enough with the paracheilinus haha. I don’t think ive actually seen a photo of a Bellae before - Keep meaning to search them up but never remember to.

I had P. cerasinus in my old 110. Mine was collected from Hawaii. I miss that fish. Also miss the P. severnsi that lived with it. Keeping my eyes open for any pencils for sale locally.

Most of my LFS avoid these guys, leopards, tamarins, and tilefish unfortunately. Honestly they avoid most wrasses besides the basics (blueheads, sixlines, melanurus, lunare, and blue cleaner)

Fiji was the collection point. Splendid Pencil wrasse was the texted response that I got from the importer. It was a toss in fish since I had mega credit from the flukes saga I went through about 6 weeks ago.

Definitely Pseudojuloides splendens. Males are gorgeous fish! If it's eating well and burrowing in the sand properly, it should be pretty bulletproof! Just make sure you have a tight fitting lid and feed frequently (3x per day or more)

It's burrowing with the light cycle now, it was off for about a week, but with switching to t5's from LED's, it's pattern has settled down. It's picking at the pods quite a bit and eating mysis.

You better go wrasse heavy! Why have one wrasse if you can have multiple? I’d recommend a Macropharyngodon or Anampses with that Pseudojuloides. They’d love the multiple feedings.

Picked up a solon fairy wrasse and a yellow coris wrasse at the LFS yesterday and I adore them.

You’ll love it even more when that yellow becomes a mature male. I’ve seen one in my LFS and they’re beautiful, the anal fin is like a red with a yellow band and the face has these beautiful greens and reds on it.

Dang, some of the Pseudocheilinus wrasses really are beautiful. I’d love one but for now I’ll stick to Pseudocheilinops ataenia which is a peaceful sixline.

I have a new Melanarus and Carpenters Flasher Wrasse. They are both doing something Ive never seen my wrasses in other tanks do, its like they go sideways and then make a cirle with their body and float for a second and then back to normal. Is this normal or something I need to keep an eye on?

When they make the "circle" do they look like they're checking out their own tail fins for a moment before they straighten out and continue swimming?

This is how my melanarus, and yellow coris acted toward each other. They never actualy fought, but I think it was just a show of dominance. My melanarus would always back down to the larger coris, and they would swim away like nothing happened.


On another note......

The moyers has not come out today. Not concerned, just didn't think she would hide after being such a boisterous fish at the LFS, and being out and about on her first day in the tank.
