The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Garlic has no therapeutic benefits, it can help get a feeding response from fish that are not eating but the little research done on it shows it probably poses more harm to the fishes liver then the benefits people claim it has.

Why is garlic out of practice??? Oh great, I need to find the newest trend... I still do garlic so am I out of date? If I'm out of date does that basically mean I'm expired?
It seems that garlic can damage their liver. I’ve seen people say it multiple places but can’t be bothered to read the research

Any ideas on how to get my Splendid Pencil Wrasse to progress from just eating frozen mysis to eating other food? I'd particularly like him to be able to eat TDO pellets and ROE. He'll occasionally pick an ROE out of the water column but mostly ignores anything but frozen (not freeze dried) mysis and also pods.

The pintail in the observation tank with him eats everything, it seems. But that's not rubbing off on the pencil wrasse.
Just to check, have you tried mixing small amounts (that get increasingly larger over time) of the other foods in with the mysis it eats?

The screen lid on the Evo is good. It was a Kraken reef lid. Only way that fish is getting out is while I'm feeding or cleaning.

Edit: knock on driftwood
Most of mine were caused by me forgetting to put the lid back on or leaving a hole for a device.

does the wrasse it’s with eat pellets?

Garlic is just one of those essential oil like trends. I think someone took its minor antibiotic constituent and then started treating it as a miracle cure for everything. If fish loved garlic why does no one fish with garlic?

I find the best way to get a fish to move to pellets is just to start a feeding response with the other fish and the wrasse should start competing.

Good point, garlic is touted as an appetite stimulant, as well as a purgative for internal parasites. Trouble is, I don't have much personal data to refute its use because I won't use it. I decided long ago that it was just an over-extrapolation from human health "tonics" and some early "tests" in aquaculture. Ginger falls into the same category for me - I won't use it because it has no real proven benefit.

Using garlic on baits actually does tend to catch more bass and catfish.

Fine. I actually don’t fish.

But is it as good as a smelly cheese?
It's definitely not as good as WD40 but I think they've decided fishing with WD40 is illegal now.

Haven't yet, but I might try it now, leaving the pellets in the frozen mysis "soup" (which I usually remove), and then trying the pellets before dumping the soup and feeding the mysis.

The pintail eats both NLS and TDO pellets, no problem. Also eats Mysis and ROE. But the pencil just keeps spitting water at me while I add pellets one at a time in front of him.

Good point. I will bring my Garlic Guard when I take the boys up to Big Bear for fishing in October!

Guess I'm bringing unpasteurized french cheese with me to Big Bear as well!

No luck so far with the TDO pellets in mysis soup. Completely ignores the pellets. The pintail on the other hand is on cloud 9.

That's because pintails will eat anything.

I can’t tell and she won’t give me her pronouns
Looks like green striping is starting to show in the face. Mine has them really faint with some pink and orange. When he was a she, her face was pure yellow with a slight hint of pink in the cheeks.

Sorry for the poor picture quality.....sold as a P. mccoskeri which it obviously isn't. P. flavianalis?

Definitely a flavianalis, a nice one too!

Stick with the mysis for now, then when he’s with the big boys and more fish he’ll learn quickly. Mine all do, my Kaleidos is currently in a placid tank yet I bet once he enters the 5 foot with 2 others he’ll learn it’s time to get real :)
