The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

I have a Melanurus Wrasse and a Red Head Salon Fairy Wrasse and they get along fine. I have been wanting to add a McCoskers Wrasse but I don't want a blood bath. I am not sure if I will take a chance.
You have to add the flashers at the same time or before the other wrasse. I had to remove a Melanurus Wrasse & a Whipfin fairy wrasse because they wouldn't stop harassing new additions. I only kept my leopard, then added a solarensis, a Linespot, a carpenters & a naoko all together so the leopard couldn't chase any one.

Got an Eightline coming in from diver's den. I have two reef tanks, one has a C. solorensis that doesn't bother my C. linieatus but there was occasional turf wars with my C cyanopleura. On a scale from 1-stopbeinganidiot should i put him in with the solorensis?

I had a McCoskers and added the Melanurus because I had a flatworm infestation, which he took care of. The McCoskers harassed the new Melanurus when I first added him. I taped a mirror on the outside of the glass to distract the McCoskers. It worked, the McCoskers was pretty busy going after that othe fish (his reflection) and after awhile both the McCoskers and the Melanurus were going after the new fish in the mirror. I took it down after 4 hours, I was afraid they would hurt themselves. They got along fine after that. The McCoskers didn't survive my last move, although it was only next door. He moved twice before just fine but didn't handle this one. I replaced him with a Red Head Salon Fairy Wrasse and the other fish went after him, I turned the lights out until the next day and now they all get along fine. My one clownfish still doesn't like him, but he doesn't like anyone, especially me, he attacks me whenever I get ready to put my hand in the water.

Thank you for your reply . I thought maybe there is somebody else carrying these wrasses. I miss Kevin from pia already, its amazing how nobody else can carry fish like he did unless I don't know off.

Looking good Matt; thanks for sharing.

Use an acclimation box upon introduction for several days and you'd probably be just fine.

Not really true. The acclimation box is a wonderful tool when mixing wrasses, but it's also important you choose wisely based on aggression profiles. The whipfin is one which does not mix well, if at all, with others.

For now...

Diver's Den lists one occasionally; last one was within the last two months (I don't remember exactly when).

I still think it's not a terrible idea; not guaranteed to work, either. But it's the flasher you've got the best shot with.

I always use an acclamation box. And I know Whipfin temperament, lesson learned! But it got along w my leopard & Melanerus wrasse. By contrast, my Melanerus didn't get along w any new wrasse.

The collected from the Marshall Islands, which is where the earlei and johnsoni fairy wrasses and the bellae flashers were coming from, is still shipping fish to the U.S. These fish are coming in through Russo's Reef. Russo's Reef doesn't sell directly to the public, but any LFS can use them. DD will use Russo as a supplier, that is were the johnsoni wrasses last week came from.

Russo is in my area, I have met home before. The problem is he sells it to my local lfs who then charges twice what I could get it from pia for. Nice wrasse.com has also disappeared (again) which leaves nyaquatics as the last remaining place to get the rare stuff at semi reasonable prices.

Thank you good to know. It's a shame that pia is gone cause Kevin was reasonable with prices and he was still making money. Up here everything is triple and quadruple

Yea, I knew about PIA closing or taking a sabbatical, and I was recommended NiceWrasse.com. But I couldn't find it, I kept getting an error. NYA & blue zoo have nice selections, but I lucked my way into a few wrasses from my lfs so I didn't need to go that route. LiveAquaria & vivid also have a few nice stocked.

The LFS I use actually had a better price on the johnsoni wrasses than PIA listed them if I recall PIA's price correctly. I didnt have the funds to get any at the time, but kept it in mind that they are still available.

OK, looking for some help again. I can source an H. Melanurus and a C. Solorensis... Trying to decide on a third (all to add at the same time, only wrasses in the tank). My choices are:

Exquisite Fairy Wrasse (Africa)
Orange-back Fairy Wrasse
Longfin Fairy Wrasse

Will any of these be a problem with the first two? I'm leaning toward the exquisite...

There's a bit of risk with the orange back, being a bit similar in appearance to the solorensis. Add in the fact solorensis can be a bit aggressive, I'd avoid it.
The exquisite is relatively safe, but the longfin being a bit feisty too might stand up the solorensis better if there is any friction.
