Once all goes well pics is a must the female is very nice the male is so sick. The new filamentus the blue is really blue in and out the water. Almost forget to mention it came in as C.Rubripinnis Tonozukai

Can someone give come information on Halichoeres Hartzfeldii? How hard to keep are they and how aggressive? I have a melanurus, timorensis and a biocellatus now.

They are sensitive shippers, and are peaceful when young. However I have found large males can get pretty pushy. Not as bad as Halichoeres chloropterus, but definitely more so than the Halichoeres you currently have.

Hi guys!

I am in the midst of researching what wrasses I want.. and I have a question.. is it a "Solor" or "Solon" wrasse? Different sites spell it differently and I want to know what's accurate

Both are accepted common names. The most accurate way would be to use it's scientific name, Cirrhilabrus solorensis.

I feel like I am going to be spending a lot of time in this topic, lol. Please bear with me as I learn more!

I picked up 2 fairy wrasses last night. One's a red-head solon.. but I am not exactly sure what the other is- I forget! Can someone ID please? He's still a bit stressed and waking up this morning when I took this photo.. sorry, crappy quality but I am sure you guys can figure it out!

additionally, I noticed he formed a mucus cocoon around himself last night when he slept (Scared me, had no idea they did this.. woke up at 3:30 am to check on them and saw it.. panicked and saw online that some do this! lol). after he woke up, said mucus floated around the QT. Should I be removing this? I am not sure if they eat it or not.

That is a male African exquisite wrasse, C. exquisitus.

There is no need to remove the mucus cocoon.

wow, $70 on LiveAquaria? picked up this guy for $30. not sure what the average prices are for fishes yet.

$30 is a very good price. They are usually between $60-80, so the LA price seems fairly market value.

the solon wrasse I got for $20. it appears to be higher on LA as well at $50-60.

I know what store I'll be continuing to go to, lol. their fish looks all healthy and active and I rarely ever see a sick or dead one (ok, the occasional ich, but that's a given)

I would do some more generalized reading on wrasses if I were you. There are wrasses that need to bury themselves under the sand when they go to bed, ones that spin mucus cocoons, and ones that sleep in rock caves/crevices. The mucus spinners will sometimes eat their cocoons for breakfast. This is good, as it takes 2.5% of their energy to spin one everyday. It's been researched a lot as to why wrasse spin cocoons. The popular belief is that they do this because it hides their scent from predators, while they catch some z's. Be careful of what wrasse you decide to keep. Putting some wrasses together or housing them with certain other fish can bring you future unwanted problems.

That's a beautiful exquisite wrasse! You can expect to see higher prices listed on live aquaria than anywhere else on the Internet, or your LFS. It's probably best you buy from your LFS as long as long as they are reputable. This way you can ask specific questions like..."is it eating frozen food", "what are you feeding it", "how long have you had it", "was it ever sick", ect. Personally, when I see a fish I want to keep I feel it's my responsibility to dig for a good amount of information first. Good luck, everyone here is extremely helpful and caring!
