Wondering if anyone has knowledge of the thermal protection commonly implemented or not in off-the-shelf reef lights.

I've just now gotten the Nicrew 100w hyper reef kit. The fan in it is a joke, so I've implemented a bequiet! 80mm Pure Wings 2, which is performing well at probably 10% of the noise.

I like to build in a way that avoids fires or other problems to the greatest extent possible and don't like the idea of just one fan on this piece of gear without any redundancy.

I'm therefore exploring various possibilities of installing a 2nd fan that kicks on only in the event the first one fails and temps rise too much.

It'd be nice to know if this unit or others commonly have good thermal protection and how reliable it is. Can't find anything online about it. I still will probably build some kind of redundancy mod into this unit, but it'd be nice to know if there's reliable thermal protection without just switching the light on with the fan disconnected and watching to see if shuts off after getting hot.

My understanding is radions have this and will turn off/run lower wattage or some such good protect the light. And it should for the price!

Now nicecrew I would not bet on it having such thing. The controller is very basic and it’s a cost saving light by having minimal features.

Yep, that's why I'm saying, even if it has thermal protection, I'm probably still implementing my own redundancy.

Good to know radions have that though. Gotta have some good protection in there to support their branding. Would be out of the question I'd think for them to skip something that probably costs an extra half cent in mass production.
