I have a mixture of fish and it seems when I feed them pellets they seem to chew it around and then spit it out as opposed to flake food but I'm gone a lot so I think the pellets are really the only way to go for an automatic fish feeder can someone suggest another option? I do have a feeding ring that it falls into, so it's saturates it before it falls into the tank

Try this:

Keep feeding them. Unless they were captive bred, they don't know what pellets are. I have hardly met a fish that would not eat them with vigor after a while - copperbands and the other usual suspects being the exception.

You can likely set that auto feeder and they all will be eating pellets by the time that you get back. They will get hungry enough.

If you are looking for an alternative—freeze dried can be an option with the avast marine plank auto feeder. As a heads up, it’s a pricey auto feeder, but it rehydrates the freeze dried food before it enters the tank. I love mine.

They will eat them if there's nothing else hunger will win the day. Make sure the correct size pellets
