My partner and family are laughing at me for being so excited about building a saltwater reef tank system???

im excited because of the research, the challenge, the beautiful outcome, the peace from the visual and that feeling that comes with it, the interesting and amusing behaviour that’s comes from the fish community I choose…

You all understand right? Why do you get excited about building a reef system??

My husband is always giving me a hard time (in a playful way) about my love of the tanks. I have a nurturing nature, so being able to well care for our little buddies and maintain a healthy eco system for them is rewarding. I don’t know much by any means. I’m just back into the hobby after a 20 year break. I think part of it reminds me of home (since that is the last time I had tanks) raised in Florida but living in Indiana makes me very homesick for all things tropical lol. I have also found that it occupies my mind and focused my energy on something positive rather than be anxious about things outside of my control. We started the tank for my son, who is on the spectrum, and LOVES and gets excited about all things marine life. It has quickly become my focus and outlet as well.

My parents also do not get it. They just shake their heads. Same with my siblings. My husband puts up with it, and with teenagers in the house, they pretty much ignore it. My in-laws it is hard to say as we see them so little. I think they think I am crazy.
But I would not change all I have. I love it too. Even through the hardships that come with it.

But, the workmen who come to the house like it. I always show the main tank off.

I am from Indiana also. Always had a tank but I gained new respect for it after snorkeling in Hawaii.

I was lucky that all of my family members are pet keepers & animal lovers, so a new addition to the zoo wasn't ever a problem. However, my siblings did get jealous when they learned how much Mom spent on me in the early days xD
Welcome to the hobby and the forum, I hope we can share some laughs and good times in the future!

Start explaining how to cycle a tank with the terminology until they stop laughing, and their eyes cloud over and they leave. Or explain the difference of Par as to PPF, as to PPFD, and finally PFD, and tell them it is Quantum Physics. Ask any children to read writing. I bet they cant

My wife calls the basement Sea World. All I know is she stopped once my Grandchildren, and visitors all want to see my Aquariums

Yes just some crying now and then Please HELP!!!!!

Some people don't understand and some may even laugh but everyone changes their mind when they see the outcome. I get a lot of enjoyment out of seeing people react to the tank. Age is not a factor. Kids to adults are all mesmerized by it.
