I have been getting a brown film on the surface of my water. My Phosphate is between .14-.18ppm.
It also happened to a lesser degree when my phosphates were down to .07-.1ppm. Sometimes it happens within a week after I change media or when I replace my sock or stir up detritus in my wet dry filter by cleaning my sponges. Can also happen when I move detritus under/near rock work on bottom. I think i might be missing something in what I'm doing or maybe it's my husbandry or matbe both. I'm not sure here.

What do you all think?

How much surface skimming do you have? Does all the water in your display get to the filtration via an overflow box of some sort? Also, do you have any powerheads aimed at the surface of the water?

It's protein. You can remove it by floating paper towels on it. I have also found that it will cling to some plastics.

I redirected a powerhead toward the surface. This has reduced the amount of protein on surface. Thanks. I have a overflow box with surface and sun-surface pickup. I checked my skimmer it was out of adjustment--oops.

That'll do it ;)
