SoI already set up a new 75 and my sand bed is on the thicker side. I used 60 LBS of sand for the tank. As I have been reading here is a thinner sand bed a better choice? I am about 2" and 3" max in some spots.

I think it is really about personal preference as well as your livestock choices.

With a deep sand bed you can keep sand dwelling creatures (sifting starfish, conchs, some fish like certain wrasse) but grain size will be important if you decide to go with a high flow tank. You'll also need to worry about long term care with a deep sand bed, making sure you leave it undisturbed or to add cleaning it to your regular schedule.

i personally like a deeper sandbed so I can keep livestock like diamond gobies, jawfish, and nassarious snails. The only trouble I’ve had with a deeper samdbed is on my first tank I’d slack on water changes and the nitrates seemed to stick in the sand. My current tank is a 70g with over 100lbs sand. Dustin

It seems like a lot of experienced reefers are going bare bottom. I love having a sand bed! Mine is shallow in a nano tank. It opens up a lot of livestock and clean up crew opportunities in my opinion. Maybe a little more work but worth it to me.

I love my gobies, pistol shrimp, and blue star leopard wrasses too much to go without sand myself. There are some beautiful tanks without sand though!

I really like this video, explains the difference really nicely about deep and shallow and beds.
