I love my tuxedo urchin! I've had him about five months and he's my favorite little critter. He likes to find and wear "hats" (little bits of shells and things from the sand) but there isn't really too much available in the tank for him to wear.

Can I buy some seashells and add them for him to find? Would they be safe? Or anything else I could buy/find to add for him to discover? [emoji848]

My tuxedo picks up everything shells, live hermits, frag plugs, the shedding from my cleaner shrimp. lol he's hilarious he's by far my wife's favorite lol

I must admit to never having worried if the tuxedo urchin has enough to play with. While I don't have one in my new tank yet, my old buddy used to walk around with zoas, snails, algae, shells, and various rocks and gravel...

My challenge was keeping things off of his back...

You could always get him a little top hat to wear.

[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] You all are cracking me up!! My spouse suggested assorted tiny hats but I don't want to embarrass the poor urchin [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Mine also picks up shrimp molt (not my favorite look on him). So far, he hasn't picked up snails or frag plugs though. I'll have to scrounge around for some rubble maybe.

Here's a pic from when I tried to put a veggie clip in the tank....

Yeah. That clip is not a very good look for him...i see him more of a soda bottle type of urchin.

While not a favorite for most reefers due to their nature of gathering coral fragments, look into a decorator crab may be called a spider crab in some parts.

They will cut a few zoanthids, and other corals along with rubber bands, algae, shells and really anything to stick on their backs and or legs including sponge.
They camouflage themselves to blend in with their environment.
I had one once my son named junks because it was covered in junk like the above mentioned including a rubber band accidentally dropped in the tank from a bag.
I fed the crab bits of fish and shrimp, it never bothers any fish or corals except to get some bits to wear.
Great for propagating corals and spreading them around your reef. Some of them become permanent while others get stored and changed out on a regular basis.

Definitely a unique critter and it sounds like you would enjoy one

Mine loves zoas too! Lol. I had a gha issue a while back, and he carried a green wig on his back that kept growing and growing...lol. Luckily that hat is no longer available :)

He also loves eating seaweed off the clip. He won't move until it's all gone. He seems to really like it, so I give him some every few days. Does anyone else have one that does this? None of my fish will eat the seaweed, so he feasts alone. Lol

Aww cute!

I have been putting in some seaweed on a clip too. He also liked it! In fact, he spent a long time on top of it after it was gone. Maybe trying to get to the part held in the clip? I felt bad for the poor guy. Lol

I need to find some alternatives for mine. I had a GHA issue so picked up two emerald crabs and the Urchin. He picked up one of the Emerald crabs and stuck him on his back... poor Emerald crab wasted away... now that his skeleton is all but gone he has grabbed my prized GMK zoas and is marching around the tank... ohh god noooo hahahah.
