I don't know anyone that has had success with them.

The last episode of "Tanked" showed one and they mentioned how hardy they are. They are one of the least hardy fish you can find IMO.

You should have started your post with this, then I wouldn't have to had read the rest of it! Lol. But what do I know, I've lost a Torch, Frogspawn, and Oc. Clown in the last 6 months...

I think it's pretty well established that an "expert" can build a suitable environment specifically for a particular circumstance, i.e. shark tank, large pod environment for a mandarin, low flow tower for seahorses, etc., but for new aquarists that walk up and down the rows at the LFS and pick out what's "pretty," things can get hairy, or at least "EXPENSIVE," very quickly.

As far as leaving it in the ocean, I agree with the sharks, octopii, scorpions, rays. If you've had success in the past, good for you and better for the critter, but for every person that has had success, there are hundreds, if not thousands, that have had failures... and lots of dead critters.

Mandarins by beginners is a nono, along with a lot of wrasses. And most beginners tend to buy tangs that DO NOT fit their tank. Sorry for sounding like TP, but no tang should be in a 30gal tank.

I don't think powder blue tang, linkia, or mandarins should be on this list. I have all three in my tank for several years with no issues.

Cleaner wrasses are tough, but distichopora should be left in the ocean.

I don't understand the powder blues, but I can see a point of view on the mandarins. I have a couple that are the senior citizens of my tank. However as mentioned above, so many newbies like to think that they are the exception and they can keep one alive in a new tank, that I'd rather people think they can't (like the old rumor that they (mandarins) give off a toxic poison that will crash your tank LOL) and then people in the know, such as the successful mandarin keepers can go ahead and keep them. Same with tangs, etc. Its a disservice to this hobby when idiots think they can break the "rules" of nature.

^^ tthats what I ment, all too often I see beginners who think they can train their mandarins and have no problem with keeping copepods stocked in a 20gal, 2 month old tank that's their first ever. And after A while Im sure an advanced aquarist could, but its not as simple as some would like to think.

So, do I, for years now. Well, I don't have a Mandarin because my Angel keeps the pod population down.

I am no expert and that is the reason I ended up buying a cleaner wrasse a few days ago and now I really want to or need advice on how to take good care of this fish. My tank is a 180g FOWLR but I have to say that due to some bad experiences with hitchhikers in the past, I only put a couple pieces of live rock from my 55g in the 180. I have a Yellow stripe Maroon clownfish, a Coral beauty, 2 firefish, one Mono Argentus and 2 Columbian sharks, the wrasse has no problem when cleaning the coral beauty or the firefish but the rest of my fishes dont like it when the wrasse tries to clean them up. Should I get bigger fish? How can I get sponges in the tank safely?

I totally agree. They may be inexpensive but I've never been able to keep them successfully in my tank.
