"Inhaling deeply"
On the 8th of January bought a Vertex Omega 150 from another member here on R2R.
He shipped it out FedEx the next day and arrived shortly after. Opened it up super excited. Took pictures of the skimmer before i even took it out of the box.
Everything looked great till I took it out. If you look at the picture you can see the collection cup is cocked. Seems like it took a pretty hard jolt and cross threaded the cup. I forced it out and no major damage was done. No big deal.
I start to assemble it and find this.
Figured this sucks but I can make it work, but another side of me thought "Insurance was bought for this, they should be held accountable". So we started the claim. Luckily the shipper paid to get it packed and shipped because as it states on the receipt "Shipments packed by customer are insured for loss only". Initially it started out great. FedEx seem really eager to get this resolved. Paperwork was started promptly and the skimmer sent to FedEx for inspection. After talking to different representatives their interpretation of their policies were contradicting. One person said if the claim was accepted the full amount would be given to us and the skimmer returned,The next said we would be given the full and the skimmer destroyed, another said full amount and the skimmer returned to shipper, and another said it would have to go back to the mail station it was mailed from.
A little over a week went by and still hadn't heard from FedEx so I decided to call them. Turns out the claim did not progress at all and I was transferred to a claim specialist. He was pretty helpful submitted everything and the claim was accepted. Got a call from the mail station a week after and turns out we were suppose to go through them from the beginning and they needed all the info along with pics so they can start the claim all over again. After about another week and a half the mail station finally got the skimmer back but was not releasing it till the claim was settled. Another week went by and the claim went from being managed by me to managed by shipper to being managed by mail station and completely cutting me out. After about another week and a half the mail station finally got something. Turns out he had a third party insurance and they covered some of it. After another week they got another check from FedEx. Totaling a little more than half of the full claim amount. I called the mail station every 3 days asking about the skimmer and at one point told me he could not talk to me about it and would have to go through the shipper. 6 weeks have gone by and finally got the claim money and the skimmer back but not without collateral damage.
In hindsight this could have gone sour in so many ways. lucky I was dealing with an honest fellow reefer but if not I could have been out a skimmer and the money by being cut out of the claim, the claim could have been denied and then returned broken, or a different scenarios that are many to list.
In conclusion as the title states. Think twice before making that shipping claim may not be worth the hassle.
