No, not planning on running bio balls, just going to connect them so i can have a refugiam, some chaeto and more room to work with. I have these two already. Plan on drilling them and connect with a bulkhead. How high up should I drill? Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Should work fine. Drill near the bottom and in the center or at the water level in the sump. Having 4 lines between the 2 sumps will ensure good flow between them. Also used the largest bulkheads you can 2" x4 should do the trick I think.

Use a quality hole saw, make sure you are keeping the shavings/cuttings from building up in the saw teeth/kerf and you should be good.

I did basically the same thing with my sump.
2 things I did that I'm happy I did was keep the connecting pipe at the same level as my return pump and over sized the connecting pipe. The inlet on my return pump is 1.5 so I went with 2 inch to connect the two sumps.

Here's a picture and a video of my plumbing. I just finished it last week and started cycling. I still have to plumb in the frag tank to the system which is what the dead end pipes are for.
