What can you guys tell me about these lights, heat ? Noise? Are they safe ? And what would you recommend for a 50gallon reef ?

You could get by with a single 250w in the middle. It all depends on your rock work. I use t-5's with my halides. They put out some heat. You can help that with fans that blow over the surface of your aquarium or with a fixture that has internal fans that blow the heat away from the aquarium.

Are they noisy ?

My fixture has internal fans and I don't notice them. I don't know about the ones that blow over the surface of the water.

Current, about 10 years old lol, I upgraded the ballasts to electronic and it's been rock solid. They don't make them anymore like a lot of company's. But you cant go wrong with the Hamilton's or giesmanns.

250 watt radion 20k, with 2 12" led actinic strips, sits very high over my tank, softies, 20+ year old corals. no noise from the ballast, over the zip when it first fires up
