Hey guys, as the title says im thinking of trying out a clam.

Couple of questions:

What is the easiest species to keep happy? Ive never had a clam so i am not all that informed about them.

Where is the best place to get one? Ive read that you want to start with one thats about 3" or more for best chance of survival?

Do they need/benefit from any supplemental feeding of anything, if so what?

Thanks for the help!!

Tank info: Red sea reefer 250
36" ATI 4 bulb/ LED hybrid from NanoBox Reef (definitely have enough light here...)
Eheim 3000+ return pump
MP40
MP10
Vertex Omega 150
BRS mini reactor with ROX.8 carbon
Filter socks

I have a decent stock of sps but theyre little more than frags at this point so i dont have to dose anything regularly if i keep up with waterchanges. However my tank is starting to suck up alk at an increased rate so ill likely have to start dosing limewater or kalwrasser or the like in the next month or 2.

Surely lots of clam experts in this forum, but light may be the best source of food and happiness. Some debate on the benefit of phyto and feeding. Some breeders of clams have indicated they do not attempt to feed at all. Keeping ones Ca up is also important, as they consume a lot comparatively, so I hear.

My CA has always been high. Last 3 tests have been 480+ and thats without dosing anything. The most recent test was 420 but i did a ~ 10 gallon waterchange shortly after that test so its likely higher than that again

Ive ben a die hard reefer for 16 years and never once had a gorgonian or a clam, i just got a crocea 2 months ago and is doin just fine, if your water parameters arent an issue, gotta make sure ur calc and alk are in check, i didnt realize because this is my first time keeping a clam and wokeip the next day with a 20ppm calc and 2.5 dkh drop and this happened over night so go figure

So clams really suck up the stuff.. got it.

Yes, gorgs are another thing i want to try! But alas, they scare me. Maybe after the new year ill try a gorg and a clam and see how it goes.

I have a Derasa clam, suppose to be a easier clam to keep. My first one was 2 inches, and it died over night after having ti for 3 weeks about. Some stated that smaller clams can just die... but who knows. I bought another one that is 4.5 inches and it is doing great had this one for 2 months now. I have noticed my cal drops quicker not sure if its from the clam. I do feed phyoto feast 1-2 times a week. Sits in about 120 par and medium water flow. Hopefully one day it will grow to 12"!
