Thinking of buying a closed loop used tank.

Any input or advice on what looks to be a closed loop tank. Never run a closed loop before. Tank is 7 feet long!!

If the tanks in good condition then400$ is a good deal and you can always plug the loops.

That would be my question. I like the idea of the closed loop on a tank that size. How could one plug the holes? If I kept the closed loop Would check valves be used so that in the event of a power failure it doesn’t drain back into the sump?

Back before variable speed wavemaker you had only a few options like sea swirls or similar and closed loops. They only thing that would deter me would be the pump needed to run the closed loop.

I also agree that you could cap those easily and rock would cover them.

I have a general "how to" that requires someone with experience since I've only used closed loops with an Iwaki in a 50gal. I have one closed loop plumbed on a 150g tank (5ft x 2ft x2 ft and on one side I will have a 1" "spray bar" type setup that houses 2 random flow generators with eductors...

Closed loops don’t drain anywhere on power failure, they are closed.

Just cut the pvc and put a cap.

Haha yeah I guess I was way overcomplicating it in my mind!

That looks like a center drain and two returns on each side. These are popular when tanks must be completely up against the wall. This is what we did before tank manufacturers put in overflows.

If you get this tank, replace the bulkheads - the seals can get hard over the decades. Use threaded bulkheads and thread-in caps. This way, if you ever need to use or work on the tank, you can unthread the bulkheads if necessary.
