I plan on getting back into the hobby after taking the last 2 years off. I’m unsure of the direction I want to take. Part of me wants to wait another year so I can do a larger softy tank while another part of me wants to do a mixed Reef with LPS and zoas. The only downside of LPS is the prices are crazy right now. I remember working at a store when gold indo torches were $75/head. At that point I might as well spend money on equipment to do a 20g sps Reef. The last option is doing a smaller softy tank and incorporating gorgs so I can keep a few seahorses and pipefish.

Any other recommendations?

Welcome! I would just do the tank I want. Buy a few cheaper corals. Once the tank is established then you can buy higher end or share or swap with friends or a club. I have a 180 mixed right now. The enjoyment I get from any one particular piece has no correlation to its price. Good luck.

My dream tank is a large softy tank upwards of 180 gallons. I want to put a few show pieces angels among other fish in it. I’ve always really enjoyed the fish which I why I prefer doing smaller tanks for LPS and SPS. The seahorse tank might be right up my alley since I could still keep some zoas and certain softies.

The hobby is expensive so unless you are going to buy everything all at once you should buy all the equipment and once you have everything you need go ahead and set up the tank you desire. It is easier if you take your time and do it right from the get go. If you want a 180 save and get a 180, if not you won't be satisfied and/or will spend more in the long run.

Oh trust me I know how expensive it is haha. When I worked at a store I went an entire summer without making money basically. The 180 is a tank that is years upon years down the road. My bread and butter is under 50 gallons right now.
