We have owned fish in the past, have seen a certain fish in the past which we all say " One day , I want this fish in my tank" and have seen a picture of an eye catching fish we fell in love with UNTIL. . . We saw how much it actually costs.

What fish has shocked you as to how much it retails for or was a fish that years ago was reasonably priced and now requires your paycheck to acquire it?

I remember buying Damsels for 99 cents, on sale for 4 for $5, then $1.99 and now theyre $5.99 - $12
The one that has shocked me is Other than Yellow tang which I paid $29.99 for is Fairy wrasses at $1000 average and french angels which were $139 now $500-600

Fairy wrasses are $1k? When did that happen. I guess for me it’s the Chevron tang. I remember getting one for $80 or so 15 years ago and now they’re $500+.

For sure the Yellow Tang price jumps stopped me from getting one.

I spent 200 on a quarantined flame hawk and orange stripe prawn goby. I got a flame hawk with a busted head who died 24 hours later and a orange spotted goby.

For $200 I got a fish I could have purchased at any LFS for $25.

These prices suck. Not naming the shop. They have been contacted and informed with photos. I'll wait and see. They haven't been the fastest to respond in the past.

Madagascar Flasher Wrasse! I remember when they were $90 or maybe $110 or $130 dollars at most. Now if found are sold for over $1000 dollars.

One that was my dream fish was the Clarion Angelfish. When I started loving fish as a kid and saltwater fish for that matter I always said to myself my dream fish to have and I will get is the Clarion Angelfish. Now that I’m older and actually committed to the hobby, I know that’s a fish I’ll probably never get. Over $20000 for these guys

So that just makes the company think they can keep charging that even if things are lifted or in abundance

I remember buying candy bars for 5 cents and now they are smaller and cost over a dollar
I rarely buy candy bars now but I did pay $350 each for 2 Hawaiian yellow tangs.
I'm no economist but something I've noticed having 3 kids in thier mid to late thirties is that they don't seem to care how much stuff costs. They rarely price shop and pay extra not to have to go and actually buy something in person. Maybe there are a lot of people like them getting into reefing

These high prices are not helping the hobby. I believe that sellers are following suite with everyone else in the country with price gouging. This is unacceptable, and people who are charging such high rates should not expect business to get any better for them.

I understand that Hawaii is closed for commercial fishing to the hobby. Price gouging is unacceptable and should not be supported in any way.

This will eventually put small aquarium stores out of business, unless they have service clientele which will leave the lights on for them ,, maybe.

As a data point when were they $49? If 10 years ago then 3x over a decade is at least within the realm of reason although not ideal, if 3 years ago then definitely exorbitant.

I think I was paying 45 to 50 pounds for yellow tangs in the mid nineties. Now they are big money and all the ones I like are even more money

Even three years ago when I started, I was able to get a clownfish for $10-$15, a firefish for $15, a cleaner shrimp for $17, and zoa frags for $5 each. Yikes, how prices have gone up…

The cost for damsels and chromis is stupid high now. I'm old school enough to have used them to cycle a tank @ start up since they cost so little as you said four for 5$ was the deal that couldn't be beat. I just saw at my local LFS generic blue & yellow tail damsels @ 8.99 a pop as of a few weeks ago. Saw a poor guy buying a bunch of them and I calmly told him as hes paying for them that they are like 10 little indians, you'll end up with one. Sad part is that he didn't understand or that those little devils will just kill each other off.
