I've always subscribe to the theory of biodiversity = tank success but has never been able to properly measure the "biodiverseness". and any "problem diagnosis" on based on state of biodiversity in either my own tank, or in trying to help others on this forum diagnose their problems has been more guess work and theorizing based on a few scientific principles of relative cause and effect.

this honestly has my excited.

I’m still pretty new to reefing (close to 5 months now) but I always thought having as much diversity as possible in the tank was best. Trying to simulate the ocean with all its micro organisms just seemed right to me. Nature already has this “perfected”. I never thought having a “sterile” system made sense. Now that there’s a way to measure how much biodiversity you have is exciting. Also, being able to determine what microbiological organism is ailing your aquatic friends is also a plus. No more, “it’s possibly brook” or Ich or velvet or “name your disease”. Though, I’m not sure we still have the full picture, with this piece of the puzzle we’re getting closer. With testing parameters, visual inspections, to a small degree our sense of smell, and now biodiversity of the microbiology of our tanks, we’re ever closer to reaching NSW. Though we must head the warning provided by BRS amd make sure we don’t swing the “pendulum” to far the other way from sterile that we go too far. Very exciting, though.

Good stuff, but they're just recycling what reefers in the 90's already had down pat.

Haha I was born too late to jump on the wagon in the 90s. This is all new to me.

The only marine life I knew in the 90s was a certain filter feeder called Bob

I wouldn’t know so I’d have to take your word for it. But I can say with confidence that what the 90’s reefers were missing was concrete evidence to back up the claims via this DNA testing or whatever it is that’s done. It was probably kind of like “when I did this it solved this”, “why?”, “I guess it’s because of this or that”, so it was a guessing game and not true answers. This gives you those facts on paper and opens new doors to solving problems they we didn’t know were the cause of issues in the first place. That is what is exciting about this.
