I work with fish everyday as part of my profession, marine aquaculture research. I’ve seen a lifetime of fish death, disease, system failures, the list goes on. I can handle these things with a fairly calm demeanor. I see Cryptocaryon in some breeding populations of our fish and there’s no problem, a quick formalin and copper dip along with a few week copper bath, it’s gone. Power outage, no problem, pure oxygen and a generator, I’m good to go.
My 4 month old reef tank is a totally different beast. It is making me a neurotic mess.
I woke up this morning to a dreaded white spot between the eyes of my blue flasher wrasse. My heart rate shot up to 150 bpm. My mind starts going crazy thinking of the work ahead of me with, tearing down the tank to catch all fish, re-quarantine all fish, is my QT big enough, does Petco have there $1/ gallon sale to get a larger one, 70 something days fallow is gonna suck, is my garage to warm now for the QT, do I need a window AC, the list goes on.......
My fiancée does a wonderful job talking out of my panic inducing cycle of fear and despair. She calmly says “just go to work and see how it looks at lunch.” All morning it is all I can think about.
2 hours later at lunch, the spot is gone, it was likely a piece of rock dust stuck on her head. Probably from the hole she sleeps in and just exited. A sense of calm finally set in and all is normal, just as it always has been. This is the third or fourth time something like this has happened.
It’s crazy how much of a hold this 57 gallon tank has on my emotions.
