This hobby is out of control

I've seen the homewrecker in person, didn't even realize it was homewrecker at first... It was a nice coral, but not 600 bucks nice.

Personally I like the Walt Disney more. And still don't want to pay 150 bucks for a frag.

As for equipment prices, Yea I mentioned above higher than usual markups due to being a niche full of people willing to spend, but it still doesnt change the fact that things are expensive for what the are.
Home Wrecker’s are 350
Walt Disney’s are 90 as low as 75

U just have to know the right people

Things are expensive for what they are but no one is forceing you to buy them if you wait for the right deal

have you looked at the price for acrylic? Just acrylic not acrylic made into anything? Just buying the pieces to make a sump and getting them cut properly is about as much if not more then buying a sump it’s a hobby where we are trying to keep water that has tons of electrical equiptment inside a box if you rather buy a ten dollar glass heater go ahead I value my life my family’s life and my pets life a lil more then the cheapest product. 350 dollars for a quality return pump that isn’t prone to failure or made with a weird metal that when exposed to saltwater will kill everything is worth it to me

I have one coral I actually bought from wwc that I got at reefapoloza for half off
I have no problem with them laughing all the way to the bank I’m happy for them they have done a lot for the hobby in a good way so why get upset that they make money?

Are you mad at BRS or Marine Depot? How about Neptune GHL because you can make your own controller for hundreds of dollars less? EcoTech and Abyss because you can buy a pump that looks the same for way cheaper.

What we do in this hobby is a stupid idea in reality we are one mistake away from losing everything in our tank one mistake away from destroying our house and if I have to spend the money to make sure that when there is a problem I am alerted or have a spare so that my animals can stay safe then I’m okay with it I’m in this hobby for the long haul not to see how cheap I can set up a tank because I believe that’s the wrong attitude to have if you want to still be doing this in five or more years.

Mate, it’s getting ridiculous alright. There is currently an auction in the UK for 7 zoa heads. The current bid is over £8000! To put it into perspective that’s almost $11,000...

Cheeseburgers are fine, especially with Yanceys Fancy steakhouse onion cheddar cheese on them, on a toasted onion roll with a smear of creamed horseradish for bite. I'm really not that picky. Not so long ago I lived on Yuengling, but it took a girl to make me understand, thankfully.

I just gained 40 lbs just reading the ingredients on the cheeseburger

No one's saying we are forcrfed to buy things, but just as people have a right to buy/sell things at whatever price the want, others have the right to think it isn't worth it.

Seems like some people feel the need to justify their purchases. Buyers remorse? That or they have stock in some of these companies. Lol

Anyway, I don't think homewrecker is worth 350. Plenty of nicer looking corals for less imo. Personally I don't really think any coral is worth 350.

I do hope I find a Walt for 75 though.

I’m on a mission to collect SPS named after my favorite bands. Pink Floyd, check! Moody Blue, check! Genesis, check (though I still think the guy who sold it made that up on the spot after I’m told him my goals). Electric Light Orch., still waiting. Supertramp, still waiting. Though with the propensity these day for people to put ‘super’ in front of every verb, how can that be? I’d be super excited to complete my collection.

I think with the ease of keeping corals now a days it's become a collector sport rather than a passion for many reefers today. Find them passionate reefers and they will give away coral when they see that spark in you.

I just saw a nem yesterday and the current bid is 2k

Seems like someone is price guagin

Agreed, no one is forcing anyone to purchase the corals, but I do agree that the pricing on some of these corals have gotten out well out of control. Unfortunately, there is always someone willing to pay the price so until that changes, pricing will continue to be absurd. What's even crazier to me, is to sell at a show where some very well known people are selling, and customers will buy the same identical named coral for two or three times the price just to buy it from them instead of a hobbyist. Makes no sense to me...Barbara

im getting sick and tired of these threads popping up every week... if you dont like the game, dont play it. no one is forcing you to buy high end.

Another "I should be able to afford everything I want"/"I hate capitalism" thread.

We should really have a dedicated forum for these xD. Every few weeks there is another.

Eh, I enjoy following along in hope of a new angle I haven't thought of yet. Again, as I stated before this hobby is as expensive as you allow it to be.

LOL, this is exactly why I have my Pink Floyd acro. Let me know when you find or name the others. JP

Personally, I think that this hobby requires money. However, it depends where you spend it/how much you spend. For instance, my boyfriend purchased a frag of washed-out palys for $5. In his tank with excellent light, they colored up just like JF mohican suns. Alternatively, look for other corals with similar colors/patterns as the expensive ones. If you still want the expensive pieces, shop around and haggle. I really, really wanted a TKC combustion gonis. One seller would sell me a frag for $800 (!!!!). A different vendor was willing to sell for $100-150. Still expensive, but without a crazy mark-up.

The title of the thread is very clear. If you are so disgusted by these threads, there is no reason for you to read it or be so rude and nasty about the comments that are made. ...bsa

Feedback from the consumers is part of the free market. When a thread pops up every few weeks saying that something is overpriced, that is the market speaking.

I love capitalism, because I value the individual and true freedom, but I still think some things cost more than I'm willing to spend.

The two views aren't mutually exclusive. In fact that's the beauty of a free market. I'm free not to buy things I think aren't worth the cost.

And you got to love the whining about whining. Complaint complainers are the biggest whiners of all. Lol
