This is a Tough, but Enjoyable Hobby

Are all these fish diseases prevalent in the oceans or is it only present in the collection and shipping process?

They all exist in the ocean but the tight quarters and poor management by the supply chain greatly magnifies the problems.

I've seen Ich on tangs while diving frequently and often see fish flashing suggesting flukes but in the expansive water volume of the ocean parasite and bacterial infection loads are infinitely smaller than in a commercial facility with hundreds of fish in it.

They are, but due to the massive volume of water in the ocean, the disease is really spread out and doesn't generally affect most fish much, but when you put them in a much smaller captive environment with a bunch of other fish the opportunity arises for the parasite population to explode and and become much more concentrated in such a small environment.

Nothing quite intensifies the desire to QT like a hit to the ego and wallet and having to watch an animal suffer.

True, but if you have to treat with copper you are doing basically a complete tear down (filter media included) once the process is done and because the biofiltration is no where near as good on a QT tank as it is with a regular display tank you have to watch the parameters like a hawk.

That's actually not true. Add fresh saltwater to a clean 10g tank and dump in a half bottle of biospira. Throw some filter pad in a power filter and within a day you have a pretty bullet proof bio filter. If you use a filter pad that's been sitting in your dt sump, it's pretty much instant. By bullet proof i mean I've had up to 4 fish in with copper and antibiotics at the same time and still never registered ammonia.

i didnt qt for awhile got away with it for a few months then lost all my fish 700$+ in fish lol still on fallow till next year :/

still wont quarantine will be paying the premium to have lfs qt for me.

Your premium payment will be wasted.

There’s no way an LFS that is also serving other customers can be trusted to do proper 6 week prophylactic QT on a fish and be able to 100% certify they didht f it up in one way or another.

QT your own fish. The set up required costs about $100. Compare to a $700 crash, and the cost to restock, that’s a small price to pay.

There's an existing QT article detailing everything to the nth degree. That's what I follow.

It should be required reading before they let you sign up to the forum.

The amount of livestock death because ‘it’s too hard to QT’ is disgusting. People think the hobby is plug and play and the fish lose. No patience and all instant gratification these days

Acrylic Tank Manufacturing also charge clients thousands of dollars and I wouldn’t trust them with a petco goldfish.

Relax. It’s Christmas. I didn’t start this thread for people to start bickering.

You're fortunate. Not many places like that around .....and none close to me that I would trust.

Red's Reef is an on line dealer that offers full QT as well as conditioning..

Understand that posting to most reefers that you do not QT and therefore lose a lot of fish is a tough, non-enjoyable topic for many, and I would expect nothing less than some fallout from such a post.

But Merry Christmas

It’s my choice not to quarantine, just like it’s someone’s choice not to wear a seat belt or smoke when you know it causes cancer.

I just looked on Red’s Reef website. Not too many fish for sale. $3000 Gem Tang

I've never quarantine my fish and I've never had a fish just suddenly die the ones that die are being attacked by other fish but I make sure to get fish that are proven to be strong survivors if a six line wrasse suddenly dies then there's something wrong with the water
