This is the last time.

I agree. I bet some Halimeda would grow enough to measure(height). Or mass (grams) of chaeto. Macros are sweet and wouldn't put any critters at risk.
That would be cool. I sent my teacher an email with an explanation of what I want to work with, if he approves I will get serious about it.

Turbostart + enough ammonium chloride to reach 2ppm Ammonia levels. You'll have a cycled tank in 5 days(assuming you have a medium such as dry rock or marine pure). What is your budget for this project?
My budget is probably going to be $300 at max. I would love to spend less

What level of science far is this for? Not sure how you want to structure the project, but we could send you a couple of different species of macroalgae and you could try to grow them in the tanks and compare against a control of an empty tank. Algae can be used for waste water remediation.

It’s 9th grade science fair so it isn’t the biggest deal. That might be something interesting to try.

I'm not trying to discourage you or look down upon you. It is a big deal. I'm trying to understand the level of academic rigor that will be instilled.

Let me know what you end up wanting to work with (peppermint shrimp) or macroalgae. We are more than willing to sponsor this project and send you macroalgae or some captive bred peppermints (free of charge) if you send us your experimental plan.

I would stick with a bunch of hermit crabs with small volumes of water and have ten or so different sets of variations of the water thereby are kept in. High salinity, low salinity, water that’s comprised some way with either amonia, nitrates or other pollution such as lotion, or low O2 and observe the effects. The only thing you would need to keep up would be the evaporation. It’s not lab science but would be enough to document cause and effect. It would be inevitable you would have losses but in the name of science :)

I really like the idea of using macro algae. Your best grade for the buck may be to track Growth to Temp. nice easy to control parameters that should yield results in your timeframe.

@AlgaeBarn Definitly going to pick up some of your turbostart. What do you recommend raising the ammonia with? Would I just do it the same as any other tank (dose ammonia/dead shrimp)?

IF YOU HAD TO TAKE A REEFING EXAM, WOULD YOU PASS?
