This is what a sump is supposed to look like...

Dam that sump is absolutely awesome

+1 on the smoothskins. Do you have it under high par? Any tips?

@gws3

I typically don't blast the smoothskins as sometimes that makes them pale and monochromatic IME. The smoothskins I'm talking about are rainbow and often with green and yellow undertones. If they get too much light they will sometimes lose those undertones. My PO4 also used to be a lot higher and I found it easier to get rainbow colors out of some of them like flamethrower. I think I could have given them more light then when my PO4 was higher without losing the rainbow. But all systems are different so some folks may have more success blasting them. I currently have the most success keeping them in medium PAR.

I find the ones that benefit most from getting blasted are milles, prosrata, spaths and some (not all) of the rainbow tenuis.

I totally agree that there are lots of different ways to be successful with reefing. That is not reflected in your title "This is what a sump is sopossed to look like" though.
Not sure what you mean by just having fun with it lighten up.
So show us what you think a sump is sopossed (sic) to look like. I'm sure his pics have given a lot of people new ideas so they can have fun with it. Lighten up.

Can't believe people in this hobby would be so "salty"

but what does it taste like?

Noice time to get a bigger sump!!!

To be honest, a sump can look like almost anything as long as it's doing the job you have intended...

Agreed... the title was just a joke, didn't mean to get anyone worked up about it. FWIW the sumps on my other two systems are more traditional (filtration only). But this one is a heck of a lot more fun to look at!

Is asdf430 your password?

Salty? I have to think about that one. I sense attempted humor.
Lol I was poking fun at the other guy man :grinning-squinting-face: same team. Was a dad joke. And my password?

@gws3 any info on the POTO Flamethrower, TUSI's Rainbow, and Hung's Rainbow in terms of favorites or care, I'm obsessed with all 3. The TUSI's colony seems to look a lot different than the frags.

If you look at it this way, it is is still filtration.

Acros consume ammonia (simple N source), some NO3 and some PO4. With that said, growing acros in the sump does allow for some nutrient reduction if done on a scale like you have.

Just food for thought lol.

I have the tusi and other smoothskins. For me it's either good color with no growth or growth with no color! I don't know if I want to move it or keep it there honestly.

TUSI's has been the easiest for me lately. Anywhere from 200-400 PAR in any of my systems and it's been doing well.

Flamethrower was easier for me to fully color up when my PO4 was higher. I keep it medium to high PAR. If high PAR it seems to prefer a really blue spectrum. I am pulling some good colors under some pieces of it getting blasted right under reefbrite XHOs.

Hung's is finicky. The worst part is how slow it grows. Usually if I lose a frag or mini colony of a coral it's no big deal as I have others of the same coral and they'll grow back in no time. With Hung's it grows so slow that losing a mini colony is a huge set back. I keep it in medium to medium high PAR. I haven't figured out any tricks to get it to grow faster or be really hardy.

They can all take a long time to get going. TUSIs was slow for me at first but is growing well for me now and I have multiple mini colonies of it. If it's colored up well I would leave it be and I think the growth will come eventually.

Any mini colony pics of the TUSI's?

I have a pic of the "mother colony" in my eye candy thread (link below). I don't think I have any pics of the other mini colonies handy. The mother colony was my source for frags before, but now that I have some mini colonies going I am going to try to let one of them grow out into a large colony. My mother colony is only about 3-4" so it's growth pattern as a full colony is kinda TBD still... will be fun to see.
