I just saw my foxface with what looked like slimy stuff coming off its body. I was not able to get a photo and he seems to be ok now but I'm just wondering what that could have been.
While it was coming off he seemed aggrevated by it.. Kept jumping around if that makes sense, looked like he was trying to get it off of him.

Sounds like bacterial infection:

I was just reading another post describing theirs doing what sounds like the same thing I saw. It was mentioned that they shed their mucous layer (or something similar) ever heard of that?

Not sure. #reefsquad

Foxfaces will shed their slime coat occasionally. It's their protection against parasites, stings, etc. If the coat is uneven, it may be a sign of some sort of distress the fish is experiencing. If the coat is uneven, the fish will try to shed the coat to where it is comfortable. Kinda like we shed jackets, sweaters, etc. to be comfortable. So you may want to consider checking things like water parameters, temp, aggression, stings, etc.

This exactly. If alarms us all when it happens for the first time (the shedding of the slime coat in foxfaces)

On an unrelated note.. My foxface is always a dark color across the top of its body. For a little while in quarantine it had the bright yellow color all over but ever since putting it in the main tank like 4 months ago its been dark across the top. Any idea why?
Here's a photo from the other day for reference

They often change colors as they mature. Perhaps it’s environmental factors. It’s not uncommon and that looks like a healthy foxface to me! :)

He acts normal other then being really skittish anytime someone is around the tank so I didn't think there was anything wrong with him I just wish he would get the bright yellow that I see in most other foxface. What sort of environmental factors could it be?

This is solely conjecture — light, water quality, perhaps even specific gravity — it’s tough to say. I suspect maturity/size plays a role.

Foxface are often skittish for months until warming up to captivity. I’ve had my maggie foxface for about one year and she’s just recently stopped swimming away when I am near. I had another magnificent foxface previously that hid for years before finally warming up to me. She was uncharacteristically skittish— an outlier IMO, however.
