Hello all,

Getting back into the hobby after a 7 year break and super excited. In 20 years in the hobby I've never setup a quarantine systems, but since this will be my biggest tank (210) with lots of tangs I'm giving it a shot.

It's a 30 gallon tank with all the required equipment (pump, filter, heater, PVC etc). Salinity is at 1.022. Temp is 77.5 I brought ammoina up to 2ppm using Dr. Timm's ammonium chloride and added 16ozs of Fritz Zyme 9. Ammonia is on it's way down as well as nitrite. Hoping to start adding fish in about a week or so.

My plan is to use Copper Power to get a level of 2ppm in the tank for 30 days. I bought a Hana checker to measure copper. I also bought prazi pro. I've heard that I can run it at the same time as the copper? If it's OK I'd like to do that. Otherwise after the copper treatment run PraziPro for 2 weeks?

Any other important medications I should have on hand or consider purchasing ahead of time?

Sounds like a good plan. You can run prazi with copper but will need to watch for bacterial blooms and ensure lots of flow. Here’s the recommended QT protocol:

Always good to have some antibiotics on hand such as metro, furan and kanaplex. You may also consider treating prophylactically for internal parasites. Good luck!

One other thing... I believe its important to match the salinity of your qt tank to that of incoming fish. I was very surprised to see how low the salinity of incoming fish was. Again, that’s described the in the first link.

Thanks for the help. I saw that other thread, but I only have 1 QT tank. Gonna try to get by :)

I set the salinity of the QT tank to 1.022 because I know a lot of places use 1.021 for fish only systems. My display tank is 1.026.

Why 3 different antibiotics? Do you treat with all 3 at the same time? What can and can't be mixed including copper or prazi?

I very much appreciate the feedback!

We sometimes need to do the trifecta
https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/dosing-the-trifecta.386582/

But, I’ve found that if I transfer out of copper after 14 days, I don’t really need antibiotics often.

I’m personally not a fan of keeping a QT running 24/7. If you get a diseased batch of fish, you’re going to have to break it down anyhow. My preferred approach is to ‘seed’ a bunch of biomedia in your display sump so that you can easily establish a clean QT as required. I’m also not a fan of jumping directly into medicating. Much better to give new fish a chance to acclimate and get them eating before blasting with copper. The only exception is a single dose of nitrofuracin green powder upon initial acclimation - very good for any ammonia burn or just general stress. Adjust the salinity of your QT to that of the incoming fish (usually 1.015/20) so that all you need is a short temp float then dump in the bag. You can work back up to full salinity by adding some salt to the ATO reservoir (I direct the old water change water through my QT to get it back up).

Good meds to keep on hand include CP (if you can find it), cipro/fish flox, prime (never to be used with copper), the aforementioned NFG powder and parzipro. Good idea to drop a power head into a QT tank.

Why would you have to break down the QT if you get a diseased batch of fish?
My display tank isn't setup up yet so there is no seeding to be done. Just creating a bio-load in the QT with a fishless cycle.

So the disease doesn’t spread to the next batch.
