So I recently set up a frag tank for QT corals and inverts was just wanting your thoughts on how it turned out and what I should run in tank and sump I will be adding about 75-100 pounds of live rock in sump. My lights are a little Fuge light and a AI prime 16 tank is 15 gallons and just using a 32 gallon brute container for sump will be also adding a auto top off to tank. Just added water and starting the cycle now will be putting a sponge and media into this tank that came from DT.

Nice work.

I would find a basic pump like a sicce or similar and add a wide mouth outlet on it and have it run under the egg crate to keep the detritus suspended to get it to the sump.

Add a bunch of live rock to the sump and you’ll be set.

Is each section of the egg crate removable? I’d recommend it would be as you may have to remove to kill off algae.

Yup it just sits on the bottom with a little leg on each corner pulls right out. I’m curious to if I should add a skimmer and if I do how would I?

I wouldn’t think a slimmer was needed personally. Since corals feed on fish waste among other things, a skimmer would only remove a portion of that and since you plan to use this as a QT, I wouldn’t add fish unless you do not plan on QT for ich.

If anything, when you do a water change from your display, I would add the removed water to your frag tank.

I suppose it all comes down to the reason you are QTing corals and inverts..

I am QT for ich since I’m having a outbreak of it currently fish are in QT now and DT is running fallow for 76 days.

Makes sense. I did this with my current tank and it was the best decision I have made. My fish are all healthy, no random deaths and no need for replacements. It is a bit of a pain QTing CUC for 76 days though lol. My recommendation is to buy CUC that reproduces in your tanks, that way it is one less thing to have to continue to QT.

I was kind of thinking it would be a pain lol

How many gallons is that frag tank again? Big enough for a tang or two?

My one tip (for now) is to run it dirtier than you think is appropriate. No. Dirtier than that. Lots of pooping fish. Skim super dry. Short light cycle on fuge. No socks. More fish poop.

Why am I advising this? Well, I am on my third round of dinos in my frag system. You don't want to join me and hundreds of others over on the dino thread.

My doser is dumping PO4 and NO3 in there 6 times a day. My next step is to tie the sewer line into the sump.

I was thinking no fish in it so I don’t have an ich problem so I am not bribing ich back into my main tank I don’t know if I’m being paranoid but I just don’t want ich anymore lol. The tank itself is 20 gallons I was told maybe put a small small yellow tang in it.

Definitely not paranoid. The other option is using this tank as a backup with corals and having a QT sustem you only set up ahead of livestock additions.

I like your fishless approach though. Especially if you like to buy things spontaneously lol

I definitely buy things spontaneously haha I think I will always have this tank running just to grow out frags and for whatever lol. I already have a QT running for fish that I will break down once cured.

Yep. Know yourself and QT how it will work best for you. I think your approach is great.

So we have started the cycle temp is at 78 added a seeded piece of live rock from DT, added a sponge also that was soaking in my sump from DT this weekend I will be picking up around 100 pounds of live rock to add to the sump. She’s coming along.
