I was thinking about adding a 12"x9" container of miracle mud with sand on top to plant some mangrove. I would put this in my refugium that has sand, rock and cheato. All my parameters in my tank are spot on. I would hate it if things get all screwed up by adding this. What do you guys think good idea or bad idea?

imho in unnecessary idea. Neither good nor bad just unnecessary.

IMHO you chaeto will do more to help you system than any substrate.

I'm not planning on using it to help my tank. I just thought it would look nice to have some mangrove. I would like to give them some place to set roots.

My tank is doing very well right now just nervous about adding anything to it.

I would think sand would be sufficient with possibly a little peat moss under the sand for some organics.

FWIW miracle mud was analyzed over a decade or so ago and found to be silica sand with a high iron concentration.

If it aint broke dont fix it. The mud does turn to mud. you have sand or a fuge already? if its all bare bottom you can take a page from orchid growers and mount it, either on a rock or eggcrate. or in a container of sand or rubble.

thats funny.

I do have 2 inches of sand in my fuge. I just thought the mangrove we need something more dense to root in. I'm not going to add mud I'll just stick some mangrove in and see what happens.

I used a suction cup and a zip tie to keep it placed till it rooted.

Fiji mud will benefit mangroves ..miracle mud is a hoax imo .. Might as well use all sand or aragonite
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I happen to use miracle mud for over 10 years now and my success with it and whatever it contains has worked out great!
I will say this though, I use it as ecosystem aquarium instructs on their website.
1.Proper size refugium for display tank. 2.Right amount of mud and only mud for that refugium which equates to about 1" throughout.
3. Right amount of circulation going through the refugium.
And last, I exchange 50% once a year.
I also use a skimmer.
For the application of growing mangroves and mixing with sand, and then having mangroves root into it, making a 50%/yr change difficult, I would say no, don't waste your money. My .02[emoji4]

I would add that mangroves while nice are actually trees the in the wild grow to many feed in height.

IMHO it is much better to grow macro algaes.

my .02

Nibejeebies welcome to R2R, from a Miami Dade Fire paramedic!
Your turnover is the circulation produced from your return pump, which is water that gets processed through a pad or sock, chemical media, skimming and a refugium if you decide to start one below. Power heads are re-circulating water within your display which is also very beneficial but not turnover.
As far as the bio balls, the bacteria they harbor are aerobic and their end product especially long term is nitrates.
It is best to SLOWLY remove them.
