Thoughts on Reef Jars?

We already sell jars on the website- They just come with pods in them first

You should totally do that!
Maybe then you’d be able to see how these small critters behave in a reef.
Who needs cylinder tanks when you can have a jar?
I had a tiny jam jar set as a reef on my windowsill with some macro, it didn’t last long unfortunately. This thread is making me think of some ideas… Wonder how long it’ll take to melt the yankee candle jar I have

And no oxygen or food. LOL. They are in fact alien creatures that came down on the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. Haha.

Jars are problematic. Because they are small people think that they are easy. This is one of those counter-intuitive things about this hobby ... smaller is harder.

Thankfully much of the coral world today is captive prop., so when the corals get killed as they eventually will, not much is lost.

I like @Eagle_Steve's jar.

And that brings me to my final point, if the jar is housing things that don't require supplementation I think that is an interesting idea. If it does require supplementation (Ca etc ..) I think that is a recipe for disaster. I have a small tank and deal with the issues of supplementation. They require some serious consideration and problem solving to get under control. I can't even imagine the ugliness surround this in a jar.

@AlgaeBarn I do however like your jars ... definitely a good idea.

I am fond of encrusting corals so I am hoping that weekly water changes will be enough without having to supplement anything

What coral are you trying?

EDIT: If I was going to attempt this I would essentially create an open system. I would have a large container of premixed water and I would water change constantly through out the day using a doser. A continous duty doser would be the best type of doser for this. You have got to keep your alk stable and that will be no small feat. Also you are going to have to make sure that your ambient CO2 doesn't jack around. This will be a very difficult challenge. Don't take it lightly it isn't easy.

These will be easier, they like a lower alk and seem pretty tolerant to fluctuations in alk. Make sure you are feeding, to help.

They are! I swear I would forget about any of them in the jar then come back to find it had grown all over it. Wonder what would happen if you had a small polyp of Yellow Polyps, a small polyp of GSP and a small polyp of Xenia. Who would outgrow who?

Protip: if anyone wants to do a window jar, xenia, polyps, and the like are ok, but don't expect much color. They're mostly for form and movement.
Macros are going to give you the color and pop, and a varietywould be cool. If only we knew someone who specializes in that...

okay, listen here. get your note pad out if you're planning on a jar "reef"

Green Macroalgae on some rock but have a small vibrant goby species in there.
something like I dont know... a Discordipinna species

We have a lid on ours but I was asking on their build if they chose to keep the lid of because it was in a window seal and possibly getting more light/heat.


All these suggestions are killing me and trying to resist the urge of setting up multiple jars haha

One suggestion if you're asking for suggestions for a retail product, take a look at the reef smart light. Integrating the light in the lid does so much for the aesthetics of a jar, and if it seals decently that also resolves evaporation issues.

One suggestion if you're asking for suggestions for a retail product, take a look at the reef smart light. Integrating the light in the lid does so much for the aesthetics of a jar, and if it seals decently that also resolves evaporation issues.

We aren't looking for suggestions to create a product- we set one up! I've seen some people get pretty creative hiding the light in the lid. We went with a Kessil 360 and plan on having a plant trail on the mount. We added silicon to our jar lid with a gap for the airline hose to easily go through.

But if you change all the water weekly like some other threads do you shouldn't need to supplement anything now I want one
