Hello fellow reefers, I am looking to purchase the Reef Octopus BH100F HOB skimmer for my 40 Breeder.

Since I am not going to do a sump, I wanted to know your thoughts on this skimmer if it is any good and is it worth paying $100 used?

I currently have a Tunze 9002, should I just use this instead?

I will be stocking the 40 Breeder as a mixed tank, but primarily softies and LPS.

Thanks.

Bump for OCTO users!

I haven't used the 100f but have been using the old BH-100 for years now on my 29g FOWLR. The only trouble it ever gave me was overflowing...but that was my fault. Salt creep/calcium deposits collected in the hole that connects the air hose to the venturi on the pump head. A scraping out and acidic cleaning removed it and it runs flawlessly. I got it new from Marine Solutions who is local to me and a sponsor here for $100 back in 2006...not sure how much more the newer model is worth used.

I'd say either would be good. The surface skimmer box on the octopus is nice though. Plus it's pretty low profile, no pump on the water. It really boils down to if you want the skimmer in your tank or just a small surface skimmer box. You could probably sell that Tunze and buy the octopus and not lose any money on it.

Thanks Jonbar1. I'll make sure to keep up and clean out the salt creep and calcium deposits.

Dkerns06, thanks for your recommendations.

I've been using the Tunze on my BioCube 29 gallon and I am happy with the results, I just don't think it'll be strong enough for my 40 Breeder.
