Hello all,

Starting a new reef tank and coming from a 20 gallon all in one (Nuvo20). Currently in my 20, I have LR and some soft corals, one fish and shrimp. Tank has been spot on for over a year, close to 1.5 years. I did have the normal Cyno and silica stuff do deal with but it's a long time since. That being said, in my new setup I am going with a 50 gallon acrylic display tank and a 20 gallon acrylic sump. The sump has a place for a refug but I hadn't planned on using it. However, after speaking with some others who have contributed their success to the refug, I am now considering it. I was going to run a reactor with carbon and GFO but would a refug be a better, natural option? I have no experience with these so any input is welcomed since I plan on having increasing the bio-load with around 4 or 5 fish in the 50.

Thanks!

Welcome to r2r. I like fuges, give it a shot, if you need more nutrient reduction then look at adding a reactor. Ultra low nutrient isn’t really in vogue anymore so it seems a lot more people are happy with their nutrient levels that a fuge keeps them at.

Oh, so it's super important to have zero now? Seems algae would be harder to keep back but maybe not. Are there any downsides to a refug?
