You are more likely to crack heads using pipe thread tape because it makes them easier to turn. So it's easier to over tighten even with hands.Gotta confess, I still use tape on pvc threads. Only things I ever cracked were bulkheads so now I only use slip bulkheads.
I used to use teflon tape for PVC threaded fittings until I saw this post with link from @crusso1993:

Okay. I know you're not supposed to use teflon tape to seal PVC pipe threads because of force / compression issues. So what sealant / putty am I supposed to use? Thanks in advance.www.reef2reef.com
