Three More questions..

After almost two weeks rocks are starting to get this gold/brown stuff on them is this normal? Also noticed that a small bug decided to commit suicide in the tank yesterday.. Figured it would have got filtered but, to my surprise still floating on top of water.. Is my version of a skimmer not right? And last one I also noticed pictured at bottom what looks like a brown looking grass growing on one of the rocks.. like 5 little 1/8 inch arms.. I tried to get a close up but, kind of blurry...

The last thing is.probably hair algae, the pics won't load on my phone. But that is what it sounds like.


The first thing is normal for a new tank.

1) Brown dust is Diatoms. Totally harmless and will go away as your tank matures.
2) If your seeing any type of film on the waters surface then it is not being skimmed properly.
3) Pic is not good enough to identify sorry.

Agree with diatoms. Almost all newly set up tanks experience this as the tank cycles. Once it cycles it should go away. You may also get some green algae also.
