THROW BACK THURSDAY! What was your very first coral?

For this week's #TBT, what was your first coral ever?

Mine was actually several palys and a green sinularia that I got when I went to pick up some live rock and live stock for my first reef. The sinularia is the coral that I kept with me all the way through my move from Virginia to Ohio. I got rid of it when I moved from Ohio to California.

So what was yours?

Mine was a single hammer coral head that my uncle gave to me. Grew into over 30+ heads. I still have it today

This guy was a small plug when I got him. He covers most of a rock now after two years.

First coral was Anthelia polyps which I got with the IPSF Mix and Match special. I bought those 5/9/2000....I still have the receipt(went through some old aquarium documents yesterday).

Second and third were green striped mushroom rock ($21.00) and pom pom xenia ($27.00) both from Inland Reef Aquaria, 7/16/2000. I still have the mushrooms in my system.

A 4” rock of green star polyps. Today I still have it. Plus a lot more, and there are probably lots of other people with frags of it I’ve given away.

first coral was a frogspawn. I thought it died in a mini tank crash, but sprouted new polyps from the skeleton!

Not 100% sure, but I think a Duncan coral.

Very first coral was a single head of candy cane coral (calustrea)

The first one I got that survived was a green goniopora. The fish store I got it from did not mention it was difficult to maintain or that it needed fed, but I did my own research!

Aiptasia.....and I wish I was joking. Brought home my very first LR that had a whopper Aiptasia on it.

My wife and I thought it was the coolest looking thing until we found out it can overpolutate and sting corals

I don’t have a picture but it was treehouse of horror zoa. Started with 5 heads and there is about 30 now, I cut about 10 at one point.

My fist coral is this. Still not quite sure what it is. Pretty sure it’s not gorgonian. 6 years ago it was a single stalk about 3 inches. Now it’s two branches about 6 inches.

My 1st was & still is a Toad Stool . i can't remember how long it's been. This animal has been thru it All !

Mine was a toadstool and a Colt. Got them at the same time.

The first picture is either from late 2005 or early 2006. I think it's 2006. The red mushrooms on the left hand side. (I don't even remember aquaclear powerheads). The second picture was taken just before I replied to this thread July 26th 2018. I remember buying the red mushrooms and since then I've gone through 4 display tanks, various satellite tanks. Several major major crashes where I lost nearly everything, and I've even sold that red mushroom colony probably more then once. Plus a long distance move which caused many deaths. Still polyps eventually pop up on my rock all the time. Lately I haven't been seeing as many so I took a frag of one and will grow it out again. As you can see in the second picture palys are growing over it, as recently as in the last couple of years I lost a big patch to that. It's nothing too special but since it is my first coral I make the effort to make sure it's always with me.

Hmm, I dont remember my first coral but the first thing I added to the reef was a green carpet anemone around '95; it promptly died because I had no idea what I was doing.

A green kenya tree. I wish I had pictures but unfortunately it was not long for my extremely young, 10 gallon college experiment.
It did, however, teach me a valuable lesson : patience. If you rush, all you'll have in the end is a box of cyno and dino with one miserable clown holding on just to spite you.
