Hello guys, so I want to know if anyone here has experience with a pistol shrimp or if they know anything about them? I got a tiger pistol shrimp along with a goby, for about a month now. On Friday when I was feeding them I noticed a weird looking “rock” and when I got closer to figure out what it was, it was my pistol’s big claw :(. Well, I started to look for the shrimp and when it came out of the cave.. it was missing BOTH claws. Is this normal? The water is okay. The only thing is that the nitrates are super high and as much as I try to bring them down, they still high. Also, the Saddleback clownfish do bother the goby and shrimp a lot!! Could it be stress related? I know that they could lose one claw, but both? Please let me know what do you guys think!! Thank you in advanced.

Hi, its definitely a molt. Within few weeks to a month it will grow back. I am surprised you even see your shrimp. Mine is about a year old and I hardly ever see it in a 55g tank. Always hear it though. I put a clam shell with some meat on it next to the tunnel and only see claws coming out to grab it, never have I've seen him full length, since releasing to tank. In any case you have nothing to worry.

Oh thank you, I feel so much better now and yes, he is always out, working lol. I’m just sad I don’t hear the snapping anymore :(

That’s them.

Tigers are imo the coolest pistol shrimp! It is common to see a molt when introduced to a new tank.

I have heard of tiger pistols being giant turds and shifting all of the nearby corals to its cave entrance, and they may go hunting around at night for fish, is this true? i heard the candy canes are more desirable as they don't do any of that. I have a tiger pistol in my sump waiting to be transferred into the new tank but I'm having second thoughts now.

eve, to help further address nitrates in my tank, i’m temporarily running chemi-pure blue in a canister filter ... it’s been working. :)

respectfully,
rick

He is actually good! He does have entrances all over the tank lol but it doesn’t really bother me. He ignores everyone in the tank and only snaps when they get really close! Very active little guy! I added a little clip, not sure if you saw it.

I see, thank you. I guess I'll keep him in my plans but will wait until I get my goblet, and if by then my lfs brings in candycanes I will swap them, if not then he will do

My tiger shrimp is a turd and he has moved all my frags that werent glued down. That's ok. I had the candy cane shrimp before and found him to be boring and I never seen him out. The tiger shrimp is always out till i get real close to the tank and my gobie hits him so he darts under a rock.

Yours is more visible because of a goby. Mine is not paired and therefore blind as a bat on his own.
How you gonna snap without a pistol? :-)
