Ok, so after a year running a 46gal DT using a CPR wet/ dry with integrated skimmer it's time for me to take this more serious.

I've been experiencing some phosphate and want to update to a proper refugium with a real skimmer and macro algae.

I purchased a Bubble Magus Curve 5. Water depth is spec'd at 9.5 - 11 in.

I'm looking at sumps and really like the Trigger Elite layout (crystal or ruby).

Question (noob)... Does the water level specified by the sump need to fall in the range of the skimmer for it to work correctly?

I know I can raise the skimmer its self if the sump is deep, but I'm worried if the sump is shallow compared to the skimmer's recommended water level.

Yes try to keep it within the water level spec
Baffles will determine your water height

Absolutely the water level needs to be within the specification range to ensure proper skimmer function. Too much water and you will pull too much skimmate, and the cup will always be full. If the water level is too low, then the nasty stuff concentrates in the neck of the skimmer but never makes it into the collection cup and out of the water column.

Like you said initially. You can have it too deep, because you can always put the skimmer on a stand. But too shallow and there is nothing you can do. Preferably get ones with an adjustable height baffle. That way you can put the water level wherever you want it.

Just keep in mind overhead clearance if you decide to use a stand. If you oversize your skimmer then need to put it on a stand, you may not be able to remove the collection cup depending on your sump geometry and arrangement.

Thanks for confirming my understanding.

Any sump mfgrs to add to my list
- Trigger
- Synergy
- Precision Marine
- Eshopps
- ?

Actually, with that skimmer specifically (I have it), most people have the best luck at around 7 inches deep.

Did it!!!

Pulled the trigger on a new filter system
- Trigger Systems Ruby 30 elite (love the refuge concept)
- Bubble Magus Curve 6
- Additional live rock curing
- Need light and macro algae

About 3.5 hours to pull out the CPR and re-plumb.

Barely squeezed it all under cabinet, but going to love the big sump.
